Ouch...Dropped a book on my toe....Time to sue the publisher

The things people sue for these days are nuts.  A guy fell through a skylight while breaking into someones house.  I think he had a knife impale his foot.  He sued the home owner and WON  Crazy world now.  Some judges must have no common sence :-/

Its different but ide almost prefer summer homework but limit the after school work.  My old school i had 7 classes a day and would come home to 4 to 5 hours of homework every night.  That gets to be WAY to much.  It became impossible to ballence work and school at the same time.  I had to choose one or the other.  Part of the problem is the state requirments.  I was forced into several classes i could have done without.  The school wouldnt let me drop them eather.  Eventualy it would get to where 3 of my classes i just stopped doing the homework and failed them.  7 hours at school is one thing.  But 4 or 5 hours after that is rediculous.  Now I'm lucky enough to be in a school where my vocational takes half the day and then i only have 2 afternoon classes that put togather i only have maby an hours work if none most nights.  Only twice this year have i acualy had to sit and work on something for several hours.

yep, me and everyone else in my district (roughly 12,000 students) are required to read 3 books, 5 if in honors. these books arent the simple ones, oh no, we get 350 page books on histroy and things half the teachers could care less about, much less us.

I read history books over twice that size for fun.

Quite right. I assume it still works in much the same way as in my day. If you want the qualification you have to work for it & make a few sacrifices. If he's not prepared to accept that I can't think why this chap signed up for the honours course in the first place.

I was always an avid reader. Devoured everything in print I could find. I couldn't do it now but when I was younger I reckon I could have read those 5 books in less than a week. I often had 2 books on the go at the same time, one at work for break times & the other one at home.

I can't help noticing that most youngsters nowadays when alone (in a cafe or somewhere) seem to sit there staring into space. I've offered them my newpaper to read but they invariably refuse & carry on daydreaming. No wonder they complain about being bored.

oops, i meant 650 pages, i noticed soething was wrong with that. but 650 was just an average. all the choices i mades were AT LEAT 900 pages

i know alot of schools in America get upwards of 3 months of holiday during summer, not all, but alot.

more like 2 months or just under for most schools around here

but i totally agree that this is ridiculous

BTW; We have a young lady that wants to learn to
fly and have built a set of controls for her to use.
She is 29" tall and weighs 30lbs and is 13 years old.
She is having a lot of fun with the flightsim. And learning.

This brings back funny memories [and some strange ones as well].

Back when I was in high school, Florida Govenor Jeb Bush had raised the score requirements and the difficulty level of the FCAT.

People started to protest and complain that the test was too hard.

Considering the fact that 90% of the students [IMHO] in the high school I went to are just a bunch of lazy-@553s who think life is easy can be cheated, somebody had to get these bags of lazy bones to do something other then [how Hagar points it out] just stare into infinity.

I felt sorry for those idiots because of the fact that those people will have a serious culture shock once they step out of school grounds after graduation. :-/ The stuggles that exist in adulthood make life at school seem insignificant.

Well, in some ways, academic achievement is not rewarded (and sometimes even scoffed at)

 I personally believe there is a high percentage of unemployed people who just don't want to work, or that won't take a job because it's not what they like to do. A job is a job and you can always move on to something else if the job you are doing sucks, I have done it a couple of times, but I have always had a job.

 I can never understand people being out of work (in the area I work, situation may be different elsewhere) when I drive down the road seeing help wanted signs everywhere, or the classifieds are 4 pages long with help wanted ads. I think every business that needs help should be required to report their openings to the unemployment agency and anyone that qualifies for those positions should be required to go to work, taking consideration of their experience of course.
 I wouldn't expect someone who has pushed papers for 20 years to work on an assembly line because they would most likely be useless in that position and just get in the way.

Its not just the US, same thing happens over here in school. It's annoying when you complete an essay, hand it in and find that 5 people forgot to do it. They either:
a. make up an excuse, avoiding punishment
b. say they forgot and get a time extension.
I always wonder why we don't all get a time extension, to go over, edit etc.
If there's a valid reason, thats perfectly acceptable. But when they get an extension after forgetting it it can get on my nerves (especially when they go to others afterwards and ask for plans/notes).
Another thing that amazes me is the amount of people who come in in the morning and finish homework in school during our registration period and have the nerve to ask others for help (again, if they didn't understand the homework, that is acceptable to a degree, but generally we get at least a day between recieving and handing in our homeworks and if a student can't understand a question, they are always told to consult the teacher). Generally, the ones who finish homework in school because they couldn't be bothered  tend to be the ones who, in class, answer questions stupidly and try to impress everyone by being humorous(!?). Worst of all, they generally succeed and people try and copy them.
I guess it's just comforting (although harsh) to know that, come GCSE's, if they get bad grades and don't get into their college of choice/get into college at all, they can only blame themselves. At least it stops them from getting jobs where you do have to work hard and put time and effort in, especially where lives count on you (e.g.in the aircraft manufacturing/maintenance business).
