Computer Animation or Real Life?

Postby Loafing Smurf » Wed Jan 19, 2005 2:23 pm

I'm impressed by the realism of computer animation. The download is smaller than a meg.

Hm,but not game compatible,I think...except they're using new versions of shaders or a new animation technique.

that does look so real, just the clean teeth, lips look a bit toooo smooth and the eyes are rainbow and seem a bit over-reflective.

Still not bad considering it's all an animation! :-)

It's pretty good. But as with all animations it lacks that extra something that real life has.

Yes.. looks really nice.

But I have seen more realistic (natural) renderings.
(The hairs at the brow look wrong)
take a look at the galleries of

http://www.splutterfish.com
http://www.vrayrender.com

Unfortunately we will have to wait quite a while until
we get such a quality inside a game. The biggest
problem is the so called "Global Illumination" Calculation
wich bounces diffuse light from surfaces.  This gives a picture or animation the last touch needed for absolute photorealism.
So far pictures of that quality still take hours (days) to calculate. But there have allready been hybrid test
wich pixelshader that calculated GI in very small environments in realtime.
I think the next big thing to come up
in computer games will be raytracing wich simulates
physical correct reflections and refractions (unlike the
environment map that is used in actual games), crowd simulations, and hair.

Here is another impressive ressource that shows
what modern techniques can do IN REALTIME

http://graphics.cs.cmu.edu/projects/bdtree/

take a look at the movies !!

cheers
