THIS year's "Bah, humbug!" award goes to the barmy burghers of Telford.

In an unsurpassed moment of PC madness the council in the Shropshire town has decreed that Christmas shall be renamed "The Winter Festival".

It is the height of lunacy and has caused uproar in the town.

The local Sally Army is so brassed off it has downed trumpets and tambourines and refused to play carols in the shopping centre.

Censoring Christmas in case it offends ethnic minorities is actually offensive to the Christian majority and an insult to the intelligence and tolerance of the Muslim, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu communities.

Nativity scenes are out, Santa's been banned, Health and Safety are poking their noses into Christmas parties, and mistletoe is now a hazard.

There'll be a law against it snowing soon.

Birmingham did it years ago ......... they renamed it Winterval.
When the local minorities were questioned about it they were more concerened about being patronised by the eejits that cooked up the idea.
It seems to be a West Midlands malaise that hopefully won't spread.

The way I see it is that christianity and all the bells and whistles that come with it is the price those from other cultures pay when they move to the western, christian world. They realise this. Goons in low/middle ranking political positions don't. Hence they go all PC on us.


Also remember what happened to the last clown who thought abolishing christmas was a good idea. After he was dead we dug him up and put is head on a spike.

Time to bomb Telford Town Hall methinks!
I mean Britain has been a Christian country for rather a long time now, and we respect the ethnic minorities holidays, so why should we give up ours?
I used to work in an Indian owned company and I was prepared to work Divali as its not one of my holidays (as I'm not a Hindu), but instead my boss invited me to his Divali party, it was FANTASTIC!!! I really enjoyed it (the food was incredible, my stomach was a v.happy place), but no office Xmas party, not that that worried me unduly.

This is a key problem these days. I am happy to accept other religions holidays and customs, but its been getting to the point where we are being expected to give up ours because some politician is worried it might hurt some minorities feelings. Fair and equal rights my ass.

It's not politicians that are the cause of this. I would hope they have better things to worry about. It's people on local councils who don't want to upset anyone because they want to be a real politician in the future.

The thing is, these make excellent distractions...

Though I'm from "across the pond" our countries share certain things in common...

It's easier to talk about banning Christmas, ban flag burning, ban gay marriage, etc.. than it is to talk about say...

Making car manufacturers make more fuel-efficient and/or safer cars.

Getting health insurance and health care for the poor.

Making employers (like Wal-Mart) pay employees a living wage (several homeless and poor people work 40+ hours and still cannot make ends meet).  Ever wonder how single parents (usually mothers) make it on $6.50 an hour.  The scary truth is: they don't.

I could go on, but I think I've broken the 'no politics' rule a bit...I was just answering the "why" of it as I see it!

I AM ABSOULUTELY OUTRAGED. I am Muslim and I think you have every right to celebrate Christmas. I mean just because Im Muslim does'nt mean I dont take an intrest in Christmas. I mean some of my family come together thats how I celebrate Christmas. In a sense religeous celebrations is a way of bringing cultures together. For example on Eid we give a really big plate of Pakistani food to my neighbors who are actually Christian. Telford  council has no right to do this !!!

Thanks for pointing that out Ace. I'm sure you speak for most non-Christians. It just confirms how incredibly stupid these people really are. By doing this they're creating religious & racial disharmony where none peviously existed. The worst thing about it is that they're too stupid to see it.

Im an athiest, and I like Christmas. Plenty of us do, its just the few that give the rest of us a bad name - ie. that guy who got 'god' taken out of the pledge of alegence here in the US. I agree with ACE, this is rediculous.

It was his right. Poor guy! He receives death threats and gets insulted only because he used one of his political rights.

Are you a negative (denial of the existence of gods, but there's a theoretical chance that they may exist) or positive (denial of the existance of gods, no possibility of their existance) atheist?
