Well I've missed some of the subjects... (probably a good thing - hence this thread hasn't been locked yet ;) )
But just to jump back to Doug's post, lol:

Ben. A little word in your shell-like lug'ole. You've always seemed to me to be a thoughtful, caring & sensible young man, maybe too sensible. I've noticed many of the topics you post are news items, usually concerning some disaster or other. I think you're in danger of taking life far too seriously. If I believed everything I read in the daily papers I would have topped myself long ago. ::)

There's still plenty of good things going on but nobody in the "media" seems interested in them. Life in the UK is far better today than it ever was. Please take my advice & lighten up a little. Look on the bright side of life. Stop reading/watching/listening to the news & get out there & start enjoying yourself. ;)

Well, Doug. If I'm a sensible, young, thoughful man don't you think that's a real benefit to society and to others? :P
I actually enjoy reading the news as I am very political motivated and am studying relavent subjects as are also members of the family, so I'm afraid the BBC news is one of our first things everytime we pop onto the net! :o

I try and look at the world unbiased. I'm afraid the negative side stands out much too clearly for me, but wait! I am enjoying myself! Besides I'd only post trash if I deviated from facts. lol.

Ben ;)

Hi Ben. The "media" is far from unbiased & rarely lets facts interfere with a good story. If you expect negative things you will find negative things. Good news doesn't sell newspapers or TV advertising, as a well-known national newsreader found out when his suggestion of fronting a "good news" programme once a week was turned down. If you care to go out into the real world occasionally you might have a better outlook on life. ;)

Well, yes I suppose thats true.

Please don't be offended. You seem to respect my advice & I'm simply telling you what I would tell my own daughter. I found a quote by Peter Mclaren-Kennedy, head of communications of Skillsmart, a subsidiary of British Retail Consortium. He made this comment at a recent meeting of trade associations discussing advertising in the popular media & on national TV.
"The trouble is that it's bad news that sells." "Nobody wants to hear about the good news, so you don't get balanced coverage."

No, not at all! I quite agree with you. I think I'm more serious than most, but I consider it to be something to be commended rather than avoided.
Bad news is the news that sells best, which is why papers revell in sick story's, going to the utter extremes to get just a photo and may pay thousands or even millions for a blurred pic that they know will help sell multitudes of papers. ::)

Yes, I do respect your advice - but I've no intention of changing! It wouldn't be me to start faking up a character/behaviour that I didn't like or wasn't used to. :o
Well, as long as I'm a nice guy - and your not PMing with all the members secretly about me ;) ;) then I think thats ok. :P

Very interesting Jared. I can't comment on home-schooling as I have no experience of it. It was very uncommon in my day & to the best of my knowledge none of my friends or ex-workmates was home-schooled. From what I read it seems to be increasingly popular these days, not only in the US but also in the UK. It obviously worked for you, Ben & my old (young) friend Andrew who is also home-schooled. From what I've seen here you all seem to be decent, caring,

There are many different opportunities for homeschooled children to get together with other kids that are homeschooled, why now they are even forming their own sports teams and having sporting events.

Interesting. I can't help thinking that this is how the concept of a school originated. ::) ;)

...it all depends on the kid and the teacher..:-)

It depends on a lot of things. from 6th to 8th grade I had to go to an inner city school in Indianapolis, Indiana. there were 1500 to 2000 kids at this school, and the teachers were completely over loaded. most of them gave up. they never assigned homework, they never gave tests, they simply didnt teach. when they did give assignments they didnt grade them. they just passed troublesom students so they wouldnt have to see them again next year. I couldnt believe it when I got there, but some of these kids were reading on a kindergarten, level if at all. I dont know how I survived going to that Hell every day. the only thing I gained from it was the ability to run very fast. (away from people).

Oh I missed seeing the replies to that, Jared and Doug.
Thanks for the compliment, but then you only see me in writing - my family would assure you of some opposite opinions I'm sure. ;)

I very much agree Jared with you. When one gets to the hard stage, over here it's 14 (when GCSE's start) it's time to pass it over to someone else with a bitty more knowledge. Unless one is well educated at that level its too hard for most.

Anyone though can teach a child up to 14 thats had a normal education. I am 100% sure Doug you can teach someone how to read and write. I'm quite sure you can go through basic textbooks and teach the simple contexts right up to 14. I know that most normal people could do it too. But I'm not so sure whether you would want to or would be prepared to sacrifice your time for several hours a day Mon-Fri doing it and be disciplined enough to stick to a new lifestyle which rotates around lessons. That's the difference. I like this saying and the bit my friend tags on Where there is a will there is a way, - and (logical) reasoning can have no sway. ;)

My Mum has no qualifications really and is not  teacher - yet she did us right up till GCSE level fine. It just requires time and discipline. I had istance-learning courses with tutors for my GCSE's and I am still at home and have tutors for my A-levels. It's good. All I can say is I hope I pass my exams in June as it will mean a massive difference to me in terms of University choice. ::)

I believe its more a question of taste than ability for the majority.

Och well, better have my lunch and get knuckled down to that Law... ;)

Cheers,
Ben :)
