Cancer Project

Just thought I would suggest something, maybe it has been suggested before, but here it goes.

There is a project which runs in the background of your computer that processes data about possible cancer cures. There is a huge community and it takes literally no effort. Goto http://www.grid.org/ to find out more.I think that the simviation community should make a team and see how much CPU time we could donate.

Cool! I was part of one of those protien solutions one awhile back, but with dial-up it never seemed to work, always crashing to desktop..

Now with the dsl I'm on my way over..

I think a simviation team would be a great idea. Seems quite simple to do.

It sounds good but is it safe? I never liked the idea of anyone being able to access my PC without my knowledge. That's why I run a firewall & all the other applications I'd rather do without. As I'm on dial-up & only go online when I wish to, would my tiny contribution make any difference or be any practical use at all? Unless someone can answer these questions satifactorily & put my mind at rest I'll give it a miss even if it does make me seem selfish.

It is completely safe. Nobody accesses your computer, the data is just sent to you and you send it back. I too run a firewall, vrius scanner, adawrae etc and I haven't had any problems. i'm also on dialup but it only takes 5 mins to send/recieve data so it doesn't take much time at all. I have already donated 6 full days of my CPU time, and as it doesn't require any effort, any contribution, big or small, helps a good cause.

I'm with Hagar on this.
I can't see how my computer can possibly be used to help find a cure for cancer?
What information can they send me to have my computer process that can help find a cure? And if it is information that may help cure cancer why trust me with it?
All seems a bit strange, this has come up before about different things such as this, and finding ETs and since my computer can't cure its own viruses it sure the hell ain't going to cure any "real" illnesses.

Something like this is just to fishy if you ask me.

Think about it all the money available from Governments and charities, private lenders. they don't need to use private computers to work on "cures", find ETs, etc..
Hell they can make a portable phone that takes photos and connects to the internet, why not cures for common illnesses?
My opinion is the fact that such cures do already exsist, but would not be profitable to the Medical Community if they were used, that is why we see no cures No sick people, no need for a Doctor

ps: Ozzy sorry to hear about your loss, I too have had it affect my life in a similar manner.

I guess your perfectly with in your own right to have such opinions but I am not such a sceptic. If such a cure did exist, pharmaceutical companies would have snapped it up a long time ago. Never the less I will still donate as it is no worry to me and I know I am helping agood cause.

I respect that and respect your eagerness too help others that is a good quaility too have!

And you statement is true pharmaceutical companies would have snapped it up and probably did,  but in order for them to make money (and everything is about money) they won't use it, think about that if they cured all who are ill then they would have no more paitents which in turn means no more income. Same goes for the AIDS virus there are cures for it but no money too be made if people are cured, it is all about money.

And speaking of money look into whether or not you can claim this on your taxes (or your parents since you aren't old enough yet) if this is a "true worthwhile cause" (charity) you can claim the amount of time your computer uses for this processing of information on your Federal Tax Return! You would require a reciept of some kind to give to the IRS, but if this is a "real" worthwhile cause they should have no problem providing your required proof

Call me a skeptic if you will but I have had more people screw me over in a bad way do to my kindness to know better now
If you really want to help others may I suggest some hands on help, such as voluntering at a local hospital, organize some fund rasiers for a charity, visit with cancer victims and spend time with them and if it involves money be 100% certain who it is going too and how it will be used.

I can't claim it on taxes anyway as I live in the UK. There are AIDS drugs, not cures and pharmaceutical companys like Glaxosmith Klein are making a bomb from it, so much so that some people who have AIDS simply can't afford it.

This coverstation's starting to go off topic so I will leave it there. Try to lighten up and give people the benefit of the doubt.  ;D

Dom. I applaud your generous nature & know there are plenty of young people around just like you. It does my old heart good to see it.

Unfortunately both Fret & I have learned from experience that not everything is as it seems. He's quite right that most things are done for profit these days which is what I found refreshing about the FS/CFS community when I first discovered it. All I ask is that you're wary of things that seem too good to be true. It's quite possible that this cancer project is genuine but unless I'm absolutely sure I'm not prepared to take the risk. What I've seen so far does not convince me. If that makes me a sceptical old fogey so be it.

This is a lot like SETI@home.  You download a program that analyzes SETI info and sends it back to them.  Perfectly harmeless and a great opportunity to help someone out.  It doesn't even take a lot of RAM...  :)
