Afraid of Flying?

Trust me you will never fin a skydiver that is afraid of hieghts, though many are afraid of the ground  :P
That is falling never killed anyone, landing does  ;D

Personally I've never really been afraid of flying, though I ain't too fond of trains or french taxi's (130 kmph about 5 feet behind an 18 wheel truck on the inside lane with a bus about 5 feet to our right an someone comming a little too close for comfort too quickly from behind)  :P

I'm not afraid! The only time was on my first flight in a CRJ. I was pretty freaked. That was this May. I then flew 7 more times in the next two weeks and I was not scared a bit! I went to China, thats why there was 8 flights!

I have also been in a Vans RV-6A and the Ford Tri-Moter and I was'nt scared at all there.

I've only ever flown once in a passenger jet, (a Comet, I think), from Birmingham to Glasgow many years ago, (1960's).

I was quite happy listening to the constant drone of the engines, until the time came when everything suddenly went quiet.
"Blimey!", I thought, "He's run out of flippin' gas!"..... ...!

What the pilot didn't tell us, was that he was throttling the engines right back in preparation for the landing at Glasgow Airport.
(As passengers, we had no idea where we were, and the pilot was not very talkative)... ...!

I shall never forget that experience... ....!

...which is the reason why I always fly small General Aviation aircraft, in the sim, and in the air... ...!

Aluminium*, cigar-tube, busses offer no appeal to me... ...!

If you look back a few posts you will see that Andrew is just that.

I'm sure many experienced fliers would think twice about standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon (as I once did) or even on the roof of a building.

When I visited the Grand Canyon a few years ago, I made sure I stood well clear of the edge

I can't speak for skydiving as I've never tried it & don't intend to. My old boss, a highly experienced flying instructor, once told me that anyone jumping out of a perfectly serviceable aeroplane needs their head seeing to. I'm inclined to think he was right.

So am I. That's something I've always said.

I'm always inclined to think it is related to control - quite often, when you fall off something it is because you've lost your balance or been pushed for example. However, when you jump out of an aeroplane, ie, parachuting, or bungy jumping (or jumping of a 60ft pole for that matter), you, to a certain extent, are in complete control of when and how you fall, which makes the world of difference (trust me, I know).

I had a long conversation in a bar in Scotland with an RAF PEd Officer about that one...

I'm more afraid of being on a latter or looking over the side of a building than I am being in a plane.

But there have been times when I'm scared...*cough*Delta*Cough* *cough*atalia*cough* *cough*one particular northwest pilot....*cough*

I'm no "expert" but as I mentioned earlier I don't think fear of heights & fear of flying are related. Plenty of highly experienced pilots have a fear of heights. I'm sure some steeplejacks, trapeze artists & even skyscraper construction workers who happily wander around balanced on narrow girders 100s of feet above the ground are terrified of setting foot in an aeroplane.

LOL...To add to the list...The speed, roar of the engines, the rattleing of bolts :-/  TWA DC-9 that I thought was going to fall apart on takeoff,  Its been a few years ago and I was by myself... We were taking off from St. Louis and I happened to be sitting where I could see most of the wing.  Nothin like blasting into the air while watching rivits rattle so freely  Almost glad to see TWA go...Though hopefully some of their aircraft were reconditioned before going back into service.

As for the NWA pilot you speak of...Wouldnt have been a CRJ from Detroit to Ft. Wayne would it  That one nearly gave everyone whiplash :-/

One of the luckiest guys alive.... though this happens more often than you might think... I know a guy who cut away under 700 ft, hit a tree and survived, were taught on our first day of training that if you are unsure whether you have a problem or not and havn't cut away by 1250 ft DON'T!
I also have read about people who have collided and gotten tangled with each other then both have hit with streamers and survived with minor injuries, and in one case none  8)
