Doug, its thanks to you old people we dont have to work out kilometers over miles , i am used to the old system of lbs, miles gallons, and it has come in handy more times than knowing the metric system

I'm not so daft as I sometimes make out. I'm quite used to converting Imperial to Metric measurements & vice versa as it was once part of my job. It always seemed a stupid situation to me that half the population of this country was taught & still thinks in Imperial measurements when all they teach at school these days is the Metric System.

My company dealt with (& still does) many US products which are all Imperial. When we took on a school-leaver the first thing old "Muggins" here had to do was to teach them the Imperial System & how to convert one to the other, doing the teachers' jobs for them. (In some cases they lost the opportunity of a job to an older applicant who was familiar with it.) No wonder this country is in such a state.

I only wish I could, me the better half four kids room for my wheel chair, buggy for the youngest (two months old) I have a beat up Espace I get 42mpg on a run 20 round town, Iam thinking of converting it to run on gas.  Unleaded 81.9p/liter in Bradford gas only 38.4p/liter.

Try riding one in the winter.  As a matter of fact, I ride a bike as ofter as I can...the other problem is that car drivers (and especially SUV drivers) don't seem to think they have to acknowledge bikes...it gets dangerous.

Shame really. Not a bad idea but it was extremely dangerous to use on the road. I'm surprised nobody got killed in one.

There was a push for the segway, but the problem was where would it go (the road wouldn't work, nor would the sidewalk).  Of course they are quite expensive (and out of reach for most people).

I think the biggest answer lies in mass transit.  A push for a bus central station ignited a stink from the business owners who were near it, but that was more from the fact that the major patrons of the bus would be the handicapped and developmentaly disabled (retarted, mentally ill, pick your label).  One store owner was such an ass about it I don't go to her shop anymore...

Of course the Arab countries and oil companies don't want us to think along such lines but at the same time, they don't want to let the price rise too high.  That will give us an incentive to kick the habit (and I have a feeling that will end much of the world's problems if we did).  

Of course, then we have the water shortage to deal with...
