Feasible?

I think I may have forgotten so much about the details, that I've forgotten the big picture...

I mentioned awhile ago about taking a year off before going into the USAF (if they're crazy enough to even consider accepting me), but, I'm starting to have doubts.  Australia was too expensive, people in Germany speak... ehm... Gemran, so that leaves Britain.  First off, it'll be completely self funded, at most, I might make $3000, obviously not a lot to live for a year.  I haven't got a visa, and who knows how long that'll take?  After I've actually gotten there, I'll end up being the foreigner competeing for a job, an unskilled one and unmotivated one at that...  This all sounds rather unfeasible.  I do have my American charm going for me!

PS: Maybe I should stick to the homeland.

 How about turing the U.S.  There's plenty to see here in the states, from driving down highway one along the Pacific coast, to visiting the Grand Canyon, the deserts of the Southwest (New Mexico's my favorite), the Mississippi River and so forth and so on.....  Best of all you don't have to apply for a passport or learn a new language, so getting a job should be no problem and if you run out of cash or don't like it getting home is no problem!  Besides, once your in the service, they'll ship you all over the place.....and on their dime to boot.

Getting a visa to come here can be rather difficult as it is

I've got a friend who was planning on going to the UK for a year to work, but the authorities didn't believe her and rejected her visa.

I think I might just go to Yankee land when all is said and done.  Seems to be a much more economical way to go.

if you make sure you do your research and have a checklist made up for the visa requirements all you have to do is make sure you can cross off each requirement as you obtain it, that way you wont have a problem, but dont go into applying for one without doing your research, i saw many people at the american embassy get turned down because they just thought filling out the forms would entitle them to visas.

Don't come here to the uk. The goverments a bit mad, and so are some of the laws: eg, a bugerler robs your house he/she hits you, you hit them back, they get damages and you get a prison sentance. Maddness as you'll proberbly agree.

From what they tell me it's not difficult to come to the UK. Everyone is welcome.

It might be different if you have insufficient funds to support yourself & need a work permit. This would depend on your qualifications & what sort of job you have in mind. It's no use waiting until you get here before making these sorts of decisions. In my experience it's not that easy to get a temporary job or any sort of job for that matter. There's plenty of seasonal work like harvesting crops but this is usually very badly paid. As Craig & others have pointed out it's not exactly cheap to live here.

In my day there was no such thing as a gap year. You either went straight from school to university or found yourself a job. I was not in a position to go to university so got my first job the week after I left school.

I think you need to give your future some serious thought. My daughter's friend is now a qualified doctor. She spent her gap year doing voluntary work in Africa. She met her future husband out there doing similar work. Now that's something worth doing. IMHO
