I am from Hong Kong, which means I am Chinese. I don't understand why 13 is an unlucky number for the Western world, could someone please explain to me why ???

In Chinese, 4 is an unlucky number because if you lower the sound, it means dead but I don't care about the supersition because it's not true.

Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13. It is usually considered a superstition.

It has been linked to the fact there were 13 people at the last supper of Jesus Christ, but it probably originated only in medieval times. It has also been linked to that fact that a lunisolar calendar must have 13 months in some years, while the solar Gregorian calendar and lunar Islamic calendar always have 12 months in a year.

Triskaidekaphobia may have also affected the Vikings - it is believed that Loki in the Norse pantheon was the 13th god. This was later Christianised, into saying that Satan was the 13th angel.

Some buildings number their floors so as to skip floor 13 entirely, jumping from floor 12 to floor 14 in order to avoid distressing triskaidekaphobics, or using 12a and 12b instead.

A specific fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia.

One famous figure to have suffered from triskaidekaphobia was the composer Arnold Schoenberg. He was born and died on the 13th of the month.

Triskaidekaphobia has never bothered me in the least. Actually, at times it seems like my luck is better on those days. ;D

Hmmm, I thought that sounded familiar.... ;D

Well, I had no bad luck (I don't belive in luck) but some idiot in a Piper arrow turned on to the runway in front of me as I was on final and was about 20ft above the ground while doing my weekly flight. I went around and chewed him out on the unicom about paying attention to other people's transmissions, it would have been a disaster if my reaction time was not as fast as it is and even if I was flying a Cessna 172 instead of a 182S. The Cessna 172 would not have had the power to go around like that. By the way,  I have confirmation that my transmission was readable and strong from another pilot who was taxiing to his hangar.

Several years ago I was working on an army post.  My partner and I were going to take one of the company trucks to the other side of the post.  As we left I said jokingly, "It's Friday the 13th--I hope we don't have an accident!"  About half way to our destination an army hummer ran a stop sign and we crashed into each other.
