The Ottawa International Airport has been shut down, while officials inspect a suspicious package that was reportedly contained in some checked baggage.

"Right now it is a suspect package, and I stress the word suspect," the airport's managing director Paul Benoit said.

Outgoing flights have been cancelled for now, and no cars are being allowed into the airport until late this afternoon.

"At this point people who are planning to come to the airport should wait until they hear that it is okay to come out," CJOH News' Charlie Greenwell reported.

Greenwell said some passengers were confused by the evacuation instructions, because the public address system did not broadcast messages clearly.

About 400 to 500 passengers and staff were asked to leave the airport terminal about 9 a.m., and planes were moved away from the airport building.

Passengers arriving at the airport are expected to be able to de-plane, on the tarmac and away from the terminal.
