Doh! - Homer's Catchphrase Tops Poll

Postby Fly2e » Wed Jun 09, 2004 10:21 am

LONDON - Homer Simpson's emphatic exclamation "Doh!" has topped a British poll of favorite TV comedy catchphrases, easily beating an array of home-grown classics.
The bumbling hero of American animated TV series "The Simpsons" -- who often accompanies his trademark saying with a slap to the forehead -- topped Nuts Magazine's poll with 34 percent of the vote.

"Doh" has even found a home in the Oxford English Dictionary, which defines it as:

"Expressing frustration at the realization that things have turned out badly or not as planned or that one has just said or done something foolish. Also implying that another person has said or done something foolish."

The rest of the poll's top 10, published Wednesday, all come from British television hits.

At number two was "Don't Panic!" from 1970s war comedy "Dad's Army," one of Britain's best-loved programs about a group of aging Home Guard soldiers ill-prepared for a feared German attack.

Though a few of you Simpsons fans might find this interesting!

British humour, who can live without it...  ;D

As far as the Simpsons are concerned, my favorite is still Chief Wiggums: " Oh boy, things will only get worse before they get any better" as his tie is trapped in a Kwik-E-mart device pulling him in...

Could be applied in most workplaces i presume...  ;)

:)

I'm surprised at how my friend Ryan can do all these voices from the Simpsons...

These he does best:

Comic Book Guy-- "Oooh oooh ooooh"

Chief Wiggum-- "Hey, no fair... You got those long legs, I got these lil' bitty hooves!"

Hold on a minute! Homer Simpson did not make the phrase "DOH!" famous.

It was of course  ??? Julie Andrews in "The sound of music" and I quote; "Doh, a deer, a female deer,"

So, we will have no more of this Simpson chappy!!
Lets keep this word English. 8) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) :P :P :P
Remember, never argue with a fool....he may be doing the same thing.
