I'm not sending Mini-Us for education in the UK that is for sure ::)
Heck even my students know what D-Day is, and they were part of the Axis :o
Alas the standards in W.European and American education are slipping v.badly. For some reason Australia and New Zealand don't have this problem... Hmm :-X
Thank goodness all of us here are wiser and better educated than many of our peers ;)

I posted this in the "In memory" thread:

We may forget, but we should keep the lessons we learned in mind.

I mean that no one has to know the major events of WW2,but you should know why it shouldn't happen again and the reasons why it happened.

In short: Let those youths alone and let them watch "Big Brother" if they want to.

Couldn't agree more Bjorn - providing the lessons are learned. I see no way of doing that without knowing a little history. From what I can tell the young people in your country are well aware of all that. I can't say more for fear of getting political. ::)

It wasn't my intention to criticise young people. In my experience, far too many ordinary people in their 20s, 30s & even 40s in my country have no idea of what it was all about. As a result of this ignorance they often ridicule those old codgers proudly wearing their berets & medals on Remembrance Day parades. Some have even desecrated the graves of their fallen comrades. I find this pathetic & inexcusable.

I find this nauseating and it sickens me to the marrow of my bones. To think these are surely their great grandfathers fallen comrades, who have made the ultimate sacrifice in persuit of liberty and freedom and if it wasn't for their blood there is a high possiblity these wretched youths would not even be around today. >:(

Everytime I go to into the care homes to see people with my parents you always see that it looks like the place has been segregated - females only. Yeah I know women generally live a bit longer than men but where are all the men up and down the country over 80? Where are they? Why are the homes of rest all full of women and no men? The men have all been cut down, many of them almost as young as the wretched yobs themselves.  :'( :'( :'( :(

I don't think that young Germans know more about D-Day as those students from England.
They've got other interests than listening to their history teacher...

Just ask a 1000 students who are brain dead and have no interest in history.

That would pretty much be ANY 1,000 students, I dare say. (Present company excepted of course).

My kids know what D-Day is, was and will always be, and I don't think there was an Australian anywhere on the ground!!!! (Some in the Air with the RAF). Maybe it's a British student thing???

Interestingly, this is the very reason why I asked for, and got a "History" forum introduced here. So that the younger people (or the curious oldies, like myself) could learn, teach and generally discuss all these extremely important events. Of course, I then decided to get involved in some time-consuming adventures so I am rarely here these days. But that is where I first go when I look in.

Interestingly - I was going to post this in the History Forum (and still will). My friends at the History Channel (should be compulsory viewing for everyone under the age od 30) have been advertising a "WORLD PREMIER" to be broadcast on Sunday here, of recently found (presumably misplaced) aerial film of the D-Day landings.

Apparently, there were hourly flights (numerous each hour) over the beaches, but the films were lost or something. They have never been seen. I'm led to believe that computer enhancing technology has been able to discern and solve a number of the "mysteries" or "controversies" surrounding the Omaha events. We won't see the enhanced films because they are apparnently too graphic, and also out of respect for those who are clearly seen being slaughtered. Also there is mention of the DD Tanks 'floundering' as they did.
I must admit, with all due respect to those very brave men, I would love to see those enhanced close-ups  etc.

Catch ya  ;D ;)

Lets put it this way. It's probably a good thing that people so readily forget the past. This way the mistakes made in the past will continue to be made over and over again. Which can't be half as bad as new mistakes being made. Because with the world as it is, it could spell the end of everything.
