That's a common practice called 'Sniping'  These people have programs designed to do just that.  They'll wait until literally the last second and beat your bid by only a few cents.  It's a jerk thing to do, but people are just greedy sometimes.  ::)

I wrote a thread about "sniping"
Ebay has been trying to prevent it, but programmers are always one step ahead!
I had many auctions loss to the same buyer, with the auctions all ending at the same time and loss all by about .50.
Ebay asked me if I was sure it was sniping and I told them it was obvious, because unless the "buyer" was connected to 20 different computers at one time and performing some extreme multi-tasking there was no way possible that they could have bid "manually" on all the auctions at the last second, meaning that I should have one at least one!
You can get "sniping" software everywhere now, I have even seen it  Tucows, CNET,ZDNET etc.

Why do people 'snipe' on many things at once? Are they trying to buy everything on E-bay or do they win and not pay, all to be a jerk?

Unfortunately, it's become so prevalent, that it's almost impossible to win an auction anymore without sniping it.

How true Pippin!
Not long ago I would be getting something delivered everyday that I bought off Ebay. Now I might win once or twice a month   :'(
