Military writer Dale Brown blames himself for his life's plot twist
In a career of writing military thrillers, author Dale Brown has thrust his characters in a variety of crises, but he blames himself for the plot twist in his own life that could put him behind bars for tax evasion.
He says he takes full responsibility for what he has done and is trying to make it right. He tells KOH radio in Reno he repaid the money he owes and is cooperating with the government.
Brown, who lives at Incline Village, pleaded guilty Monday to tax fraud in Portland, Oregon, and will be sentenced there August ninth. He faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The IRS said Brown created companies in the West Indies for to receive tax deductions for fictitious expenses amounting to more than $440,000 claimed on his 1998 income tax return which he then used to remodel his home.
Brown spent eight years in the military and earned the rank of captain. His first novel, "Flight of the Old Dog," took root in the early 1980s while he was stationed at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento.
