[quote]My point is when in normal airplane spotting conditions, you can't see, or hear, the difference.

Well i can understand not all people are interested in aviation and what type of plane you fly... But to say one doesn't experience the difference between a 737 and a 777? You gotta be kidding.

Not kidding Omag. One aircraft interior looks much like another & they vary considerably depending on the layout chosen by a particular airline. I recently flew from Gatwick to Charles De Gaulle on a BA 737-400. This is the first time I've flown on one but it looked no different from any similar type. The only way I knew it was a 737-400 was by looking at the emergency escape instructions. The aircraft type is usually printed somewhere on the card.

I've been passionately interested in aircraft all my life but this does not run to modern jet airliners. They all look much the same to me - cigar tubes with wings. ::)
I imagine that they are just airliners to ordinary members of the public - just as I would have no idea of the make or type of buses that run past my home every few minutes. ;)

Omag like Hagar says "Women don't care!"
Actually my wife is getting better at aircraft recognition. She knows most of the planes I've got in FS ;)
And she can spot a Spit a mile off (can't imagine why ;D)
Before I started dating her she'd never been on a plane let alone to an airshow, now she is growing to love flying (as a spectator), and doesn't mind the fact that I'm building a plane in our living room (although its on hold whilst we're preparing for the arrival of the new Spitfire pilot in the family ;))
Heck if its got wings and an engine who cares 8) Let the ladies go shopping whilst we hog the wild blue yonder ;D

If it had been something like a DC-3, DC-6 or a Vickers Viscount I would have been able to tell you when & where it was built including its full service history. ;)

I wouldn't go that far, it's just i don't understand one doesn't notice that a 2 - 4 - 2 seatplan is slightly bigger than 3 - 3 ... Well, i'll let go.

Building a plane in your livingroom, must be funny to see. I just wonder on what scale. ( hope not 1:1 - although it would be interesting to see how you'd get it out of that room!)

Is that spitfirepilot on its way, or in de proces of beeing concieved? ( either way congratulations - hope you don't mind my beeing so blunt!)

omag i think its like banging your head against a brick wall with this one:) personally if a person cares to look the interiors are differant on various planes aswell. the 777 introduced a new design which makes the cabin alot more spacious, this design is being taken over to the 767 747 and in a scaled down way to the 757 and 737. But the orignals of all the boeing cabins are very differant.
As for airbus, well their narrowbodys all share the same style cabin and the widebodys also all share the same cabin, always cramped and not at all fun.

No offence to any of you modern airliner fans but I never shared your enthusiasm for what I & many others think of in the same way as a bus or a train. It's simply a convenient way for getting from one place to another. I don't take much notice of the seating arrangements or cabin interior decor providing I'm reasonably comfortable. ;)

By the same token I don't expect you to understand my fascination with vintage light aircraft, classic airliners & warbirds. My idea of real aeroplanes. :P ;)

personally i do understand your fascination with vintage aircraft, i too love them while i will admit my knowledge is very limited on the subject compaired to yourself and a few other members. But the DC3 for instance still hold a certain place in my heart, it was the first plane i ever remember watching at middle wallop as a youngster, dont know why it was there i just remember watching it fly straight over and what an amazing sound it made.
As for todays planes being put into the same catagory as busses and trains, please show me a bus driver who has the skills to operate a 747, most of these guys barely have the mental capacity to figure out change. And show me a train which is even half as fun to travel on as a plane. While i admit that low cost carriers have brought flying to pretty much everyone, i still like to think its something special, i try to dress smartly, i make sure i dont stink and i dont harras the staff. Theres nothing worse than being stuck on a 6 hour flight next to a loud mouth in torn denim shorts and tshirt who stinks:) Think of the people around you guys.

I think you're being a tad unfair to bus & train drivers. They have just as much responsibility towards their passengers as an airline pilot. I don't think the average passenger worries too much about the crew providing they're capable of getting them where they're going safely & on time. They have every right to expect that they've been properly trained.

The same goes for the aircraft. Most people would punt round & choose the cheapest option & not be influenced by the make or type of aircraft. I don't know of any airline/travel agent that gives you a choice of aircraft or even tells you in advance what you would be travelling on. You have to go on what's available for a particular route at the time you wish to go. This can be changed without notice depending on circumstances.

guess i really am in a minority on this one:) Personally i will book flights on which aircraft are avaliable. Online booking gives you an idea of the aircraft being used.

I think you're a typical romantic. Nothing wrong with that. Air travel was something special many years ago but not now. The Boeing 747 changed that for ever by bringing it within reach of the average person. In some cases travelling by air is far cheaper & more convenient than the other options.

For such a large aircraft the 747 is quite beautiful. Given the choice it's still the one I would plump for on a long-distance flight. ;)

The 777 also has enormous overhead bins in comparison to most other airliners. ;)
Great edit, Bob.
