Don't tell me it can't be done!

Postby BFMF » Sat Apr 17, 2004 12:46 am

Most of you know that I suffer from slow internet connections. Today, I finished downloading the fsg_rockies38m.zip file, at 692 mb. It took 105 hours of downloading to complete it.

I also finished downloading the fsg_westcoast38m.zip file the other day, at 430 mb. It took me 80 hours of downloading to get it.

So If you have dialup, I expect no more excuses of files being too big. It just won't fly with me anymore ;D

LOL I hope it was worth it. I can't imagine why any addon needs to be such a size. :o

It strikes me that either one of those files is bigger than full installs of FS98 & CFS1 added together. ::)

I've seen files with 36MB of screenshots in a 50MB file!

Now that's an even bigger download than what I had. I use to download a demo of Splinter Cell and it was about 110-120mb in size and I got it through a measly 56k modem.

I also use to download a video of the Animatrix "The Second Renassainse Part 1 and Part 2". One was 80mb and the other was 150mb. The largest one took over 12 hours. Basically and overnight download.

Have you ever heard of the story of the Hare and the Tortous? Dial-up is like the Tortous. And as the saying goes: "The Tortous almost always beats the Hare". Hehe

Considering it covers almost 1/3 of the United States down to 38 meters across, I consider it to be pretty reasonable, if you ask me.

I cleaned all the jpg's and gif's and Data files and ID
files and such out of my Flightsim installs and saved
over 2gb of HD space.

Andrew, I hope you have more than one phone line in your home!!  If not, how do you explain to your folks why the line is always tied up?

I've thought about that problem and have semi-resolved it for some. I've been corresponding with a simmer from Brazil (I'm northern USA). He sends me a list of goodies he'd like and I, at my leisure, fill a CD with 100's of MB's

This included a lot of textures I did not care for, as well
as the gauge zips and effects and such that are not
needed in the aircraft folder, they are in the aircraft zip
if needed at a later time! Saved to a CD! This was less
than 1% of my HD space! I also aliased a lot of sound
and panels to save space! I don't need 25 T-33s each
with its own sound and panel!
