Fred Olivi RIP

Postby ozzy72 » Tue Apr 13, 2004 1:21 pm

Fred Olivi, who has died aged 82, was a crew member on what is, to date, the world's last A-bomb attack. Alternating with the B29's commanders, Major Charles "Chuck" Sweeney and Captain Donald Albury, Olivi was Bock's Car's (the aircraft that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki) third pilot. He had been commissioned as a second lieutenant just 12 months earlier.
Alas another piece of living history has passed us by :(

Not a part of history to be proud off, but that isn't the fault of that crewman. May he rest in peace!

Yep that is quite true. May such an act never happen again. Mankind will be suffering from that for years to come.
Ban Nuclear power. And if it can be done ban nuclear power.

How could you ban nuclear power if you've banned it before?  ;D

Be Nice.

This is a thread on the passing of one of "The Greatest Generation".  That Fred gained "fame" as being on the crew of one of two aircraft to have dropped a nuclear bomb in anger, is, to a point, not relevant.  Through his passing, let's all remember a (worldwide) generation that gave their all, and some gave all.  After all, this is the generation of our parents or grandparents...

The merits of nuclear power (as in nuclear propulsion/ nuclear generation of electricity) can be a useful exercise - as a separate topic.

And to think I met him three years ago...

Another sad moment in history...
