I prefer the F4U-1D or the F4U-1A myself.  Nice, sleek canopy.  The only weak point on Corsairs is that ugly, dark blue gloss.  The Marines scheme (three shade gradient) does it much more justice.

Don't let me hear you say Ugly, Dark Blue Gloss again!

Oh, blah.  I got your FAA right here! ;D Just take a look a Pappy's bird.

Silent, I must admit, I've never seen a K variant.  Very nice!  Very... shark like! :D

And deadly to the bones. Nothing resists a 30mm cannon...

Refresh my memory, on the 109K was that a 30mm cannon firing through the spinner and 2 13mm MGs over the engine?

I could be wrong but had an idea that the gear doors were used as dive brakes. ::)

I've seen video in documentaries showing corsairs bombing targets with their landing gear extended.  Now I know why.

Did the corsair ever face the luftwaffe during the war?

Good question. This is the official Fleet Air Arm Archive site. http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/Aircraft/Corsair.htm

I think most FAA Corsairs served in the Far East & with the Pacific Fleet but it seems at least some were used in the attack on Tirpitz. It's not clear whether they were involved in air-to-air combat.
Several marks of Corsair saw service with the Fleet Air Arm both during World War II and during the post-war period. The Royal Navy Corsairs all had 41cm clipped from their wing-tips which enabled below-deck storage on the Royal Navy carriers which were smaller than the American carriers for which the Corsair was originally  designed. The first Corsair provided to the Fleet Air Arm was the Corsair I, or the F4U-1 'Birdcage' Corsair. The subsequent versions were the Corsair II (F4U-1A), then the Corsair IV (FG-1D), and finally the Corsair III (F4U-4).
In all, the Fleet Air Arm received 2, 012 Corsairs from the USA, initially under Lend-Lease, and which equipped 19 squadrons. 370 F4U-1Ds were delivered to New Zealand.

The F4U Corsair was one of the most successful fighters of WWII involved in many
campaigns and Theatres, with the FAA involved in attacks in Norway, taking part in the attacks on the German battleship Tirpitz in Operation Mascot led by Fairey Barracuda (July 1944), to the raids on Palembang (January 1945), and Japan itself. Corsair pilots claimed hundreds of enemy aircraft shot down in all theatres it operated. The Corsair ended the war with over 64,051 sorties, 54,470 from land bases. 2,140 enemy aircraft were destroyed by Corsairs flown by allied airmen, with a loss of only 538 to enemy fire, a claimed 11.3 to 1 'kill ratio' in the Pacific alone.

Like most Brits of my generation I've been in love with the Spitfire for as long as I can remember. It's more than an exquisitely beautiful aircraft, it's part of our heritage. ;)

The Germans had some very good planes. However they all had just one flaw. Their British counterparts were better. :P

I believe that on the attack on Tirpitz there was no enemy fighter resistance.
