While I can't object to them I'm one of those who doesn't care for large images in a signature or any images at all for that matter. This is a comparatively recent trend. I've only added my little aeroplane recently to go along with everyone else. I removed it as the blasted thing started getting on my nerves but restored it last night due to popular demand. ::)

The avatar should be all that's necessary to identify you & that was its original purpose. I see no reason for anything else. This was my avatar until I changed my screen name to Hagar. Image

My Gremble is instantly recognisable & when they saw it everyone knew they were talking to Grumpy. There was no need for anything else. LOL ::) ;)

The signature is another opportunity to give people a glimpse of what you are interested in.

This thread seems to have stirred up a lot of fuss over nothing. Scorp is simply reminding people of the forum rules. I discovered my own avatar was over the limit as a result & changed it.

Nobody is suggesting you can't have whatever image you like in your sig providing it's not offensive & conforms to the forum limits. I'm pointing out that not everyone likes images in their sig or wishes to have one. Each of us is different & thank goodness for that. It would be a boring old world if we all thought the same way. If we show a little tolerance & respect for the feelings of others we will all get on splendidly as we have done since this forum first started. ;)

to avoid any complaints i have removed the scimitar enterprise face off banner, and returned it to the much smaller, and in my opinion cooler, Memphis skyline banner

Thank you Hagar and Iced!!
Makes more sense too me now!

I look at the signatures as bumber stickers for the computer screen, a form of expression, advertising, information.
Other words your staring at the ass end of the person in front of you ;D

I think the problem has mostly cropped up because a lot of folks don't understand what actually happens with images and bandwidth.

Example only:

Brandon's Avatar as current:

Image

Resized:

Image

Displayed as avatars both the top and bottom image would display as 100x65 pixel images. The difference is that that top image is downloaded by the browser as a 505x329 pixel image and then re-sized.

There is, of course, a bandwidth cost to downloading the larger image. This slows the forum down with the extra traffic, but it also slows the browser down. The browser has to interactively resize the image. Slowing the browser down has the effect of the browser taking longer to finish loading a page and it maintains a connection to the server while it finishes. This, of course, slows the server down even further.

I've met many people that think that the image is downloaded as the right size and there is no net effect on the server, client (browser) or the bandwidth. Others have no idea what is happening behind the sceens and trust that if it works they have done it right. The true value of a thread such as this is not in pointing fingers, but in giving people a chance to see what is really happening and a chance to correct any misconceptions.

Now, Brandon thought his image was too big. It was, but for participating in this example (OK, he didn't know it ahead of time) he now has a new avatar to use. :)

OK, I think there's too much confusion for such a simple little topic.

Thank you everyone for finaly cooling off.

I have a nice image editor so I am seconding that if anyone needs images resized or morphed, I would be more than willing to do it for you. I'm geting pretty good at inlays, backlays, and ghosting now (or so I am told).

All of my sigs are at 620 pix wide which is just under the thread width now, so.....

TLUK, your turn. Yours screw up everyone's screens. :P

Dave, I resized yours to 100, it was a small wallpaper before.
What did you resize scorp? My Avatar or my sig?
If it was my Avatar, I thought that this
When the forums actually retrieves it from the server, it loads the full size image, not the little thing you see.  The forum automatically resizes the picture.  As said before, it costs money and it's against the rules anyway.
meant that even if you did not resize that it automatically did it for you. If you are saying that it was taking up bandwidth even though the server resized it, I guess I am guilty. I had no clue so thanks for bringing it up.  ???

I really think one thing needs to be considered with regards to sizing on here....I see so many one line posts, but due to the large physical image size, these posts take up so much space and the loading of a page must be slowed down by them, and to add to it,
