Although I didn't agree with all of Heinlein's ideas in the book (that violence can solve any political situation comes to mind), I did agree with much of it.  Some of the ideas which were down right revolutionary were also brilliant.  I like the idea of having to serve in the military in order to earn your citizenship and much more along those lines.

I don't feel the movie effectively communicated the ideas of the book.  It felt like they had written this big action movie adapted from the book, and then thought 'Oh yeah, if we don't put some of this philosophical stuff in, no one will come to see it.'

And even though it pains me to even write the name, I will suffer for my friends.

Okay, Pip.  You have saved yourself.  And you are entirely correct, ST V was the worst.

But I still think the last good one was First Contact.  Just have to love James Cromwell:

So you people are all . . . astronauts?  On some kind of . . . star trek?

Its the same with most film adaptations of books ... they dont have the time to show everything. Therefore they suffer if the screenwriter and editing aren't sympathetic. A classic example of this is James Cameron's Abyss.. the original cinema release came nowhere near the book .... The Directors cut managed to redeem the situation somewhat but still didnt quite manage to explain the whole situation. Another Hollywood masacare of a book was the original cinema release of Blade Runner. WHY do they insist on rewriting the unrewriteable!

Actually, in the case of 'The Abyss', the book was adapted from the script.

True about the Abyss ..... however Hollywood had their way with the original release ...
Orson Scott Card was supposed to have the book ready so that it and the  film could be released on the same day. The book didnt come out till several months later and thats why the Hollywood moguls got their way with the film editing. An unfortunate mistake rectified some years later.
