If you've ever seen the new movie secondhand lions, there are two older fellows who fly an old biplane under an overpass where a policeman is supposed to be watching the radar, however he is sleeping..:-) it's awesome...

they also end up flying that sweet little plane into a barn...in the end you see the basic frame of an airplane upside down just above the door to the barn..(Apparently they were tryign to fly through upside down...)

IIRC that stunt is from one of the newly freed Eastern European countries. I "think" it's from the city of Vilnius in Lithuania (sp?). The pilot is one of the local hereos and has done similar things many times.

The first video is a Sukhoi, and its being flown by the current President of Lithuania, who in his spare time is a stunt pilot, and close friend of the mafia (according to all the opposition politicians).
If you want really mad then there is a Hungarian guy called Peter Bessenyi, there is on the net somewhere some footage of him flying under the Chain Bridge in Budapest, and there is barely enough room to get through!!! That guy is MY hero He is one of the leading stunt nutters of the world

I remember many years ago some army type flew an Auster under all the bridges across the River Thames in London. The newpapers called him the Mad Colonel/Captain or somesuch & he got into severe trouble with the authorities. I don't think he did it inverted though.

On second reading, a stunt of this type is not done lightly.

I would presume that, depnding on the local, the tidal rise/fall  may be significant to the point where the clearance between the bottom of the span and the water is sifnificant.  What may be adequate clearance at a given time, may not be at a later hour.

I believe that a stunt like that - like most stunts - are very calculated, which definitely puts the pilot out of the "dumb" category.

World War I fighter pilot, Major Christopher Draper (61), who flew under 15 of the 18 bridges spanning the river Thames in Central London to prove that he could still handle a plane pretty well, was discharged by a Magistrate's Court when he appeared to answer eight summonses of dangerous flying.

Major Draper was ordered to pay ten guineas as costs.
