The british soldiers in Dunkirk were lucky that Hitler didn't attack in full scale,otherwise,there would have been a really huge massacre...

I did watch parts 1 & 3 ( I forgot it was shown on consecutive nights) although I have read many accounts of Dunkirk over the years. I have to agree with Sierra Echo. It could be regarded as the first of Hitler's tactical blunders. Many people have questioned why he held back. I believe he was still hoping for a peace treaty with Britain at the time. He might have got it too if it hadn't been for Churchill's resolve.

I can't agree though that it would have been a large scale massacre if Hitler attacked full on, after all the entire BEF and the remains of the French army was packed into an area 12 miles long and 3 miles deep. It would have been no push over. As everyone knows they fight twice as hard with their backs to the wall. And I've read accounts of how a handfull of Royal Marines was capable of holding back more than a division of enemy troops.

So, just because Hitler made a mistake doesn't make the rescue any less heroic.

I hope I didn't imply that. I've had a guided tour of Dover Castle & the underground operations room where Operation Dynamo was planned & carried out. It's possible to see Dunkirk from the balcony in the cliff face. Vice-Admiral Ramsey was often out there looking at the situation through binoculars.

Nobody is allowed on the balcony I mentioned as it's considered unsafe. The door is kept tightly shut & locked. I don't want to give you the wrong idea.

Besides you guys would still have had one hell of a fight on your hands 500,000 British soldiers are quite hard to beat, specially in one place.

A massive 24/7 artillery bombardement plus constant Stuka attacks could have lowered their survival chances to a minimum.

I often wonder (with dread!) what a world we'd now live in if Hitler had'nt been the tactical moron  he turned out to be, talk about snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

Thankful for us all in the extreme.....

but what's easier? hours of calculations in order to hit a single factory or minutes of calculations in order to hit a big city?
