I might be wrong, i usually am:) but isnt it the publics lack of knowledge, of aircraft that is causing problems. I know i feel safer knowing even the basics of how planes work let alone more advanced things.

It's often said that a little knowledge is dangerous. You don't need to know how a bus or a train works before travelling on one. The average member of the public knows very little about aircraft. What they do know is usually completely wrong. ::)

hmmm..couldn't it be part of the ticket buying/processing process?

IE. You order your tickets through a travel agent or do it at home and you automatically are required to input the fliers weight...:-)

I know that this wouldn't work as well for carry ons etc. but just for a person themeslves...:-)

and of course it wouldn't be as accurate since it is the honor system...:-)

it would be an idea, but sadly people dont seem to know how much they weigh. Just goto the beach during summer and look around, pleanty of beached whales wearing bikinis, when they shouldnt be:) Some people seem to think they are smaller than they really are.

This would be the ideal way of doing it. Unfortunately it would not work as you point out. Most people cannot be relied on to tell the truth about their weight so it would not be practical. The only way is to weigh each passenger + their hand baggage before they board the aircraft. This could be done as part of the booking in process or at any time before boarding.
