Too move or not Too move?

Postby Politically Incorrect » Wed Feb 18, 2004 5:43 am

Seeing that there is a small debate starting over whether or not "racing" topics should be moved to the "Autos" forum I thought this too be a appropriate time too ask this.
It has been said and agreed by most that auto racing is a sport. We don't have a "sport" forum (at a site with a majority of men visting, beats the hell out of me ???  )
So where do we post our spots topics? Usally here or in the Cafe. but if the sport contains a "car" it is moved to "auto". seems logical, but what if I want to talk "Bike Racing" ? Where do I put it? Auto is mainly about cars, bikes are not cars, bikes don't have wings, there is no "bike" forum, HMMM? Well it seems bikes meet only one requirement for autos in that they don't have wings.
Or how about if I want to talk about my favorite racecar driver?
He drives a car, so should it be in "auto" ? Well it isn't about the car, just the one who drives it. See where the confusion sets in?
Should all topics on "racing" be put in autos? NO! Because airplanes race, people race, even turtles race, where do those belong?
It is obvious that more people visit "General Discussion and the Cafe" than the "Auto" forum  at current count Auto=1342 posts
General=27,137 post.
I want to get replies too my post so which do I choose? General is the obvious, 1) more people visit, 2) most sports are talked about here! or in the Cafe.
I guess the only correct way of solving this and stop wasting the time of everyone here having too jump from one forum too the other to read what they want, and too also make it easier on a moderator from having to move a topic they they deem inappropriate because of bad definitions in the topic listings, would be to start a "Sports" forum, one that covers anything that has to do with sports!
I know we have too many forums here now but I can see removing a couple such as some in the classifieds section which is rarely used, specialtists, many towards the bottom of the main page, all of these are seldom used.
I don't know maybe a bad idea but one too put some thought into!!!! It will be the only way for someone to know where to post items on sports!

PS. I posted this here instead of "Site Feedback" because this is a topic for discussion and not feedback on the site, but too see what others who use this site think about the debate. May the majority win:)

It's no secret that I think we have too many categories on this forum. Not only that but some categories themselves are too specific. I rarely post new topics myself but when I do I take pot luck & leave the moderators to move it where they think best. If their ideas conflict with mine, as they sometimes do, that is of little significance. I would not care to be a mod. ;)

Hi fretnstuff,
Being new at this myself, I understand where you are coming from.
It has been said and agreed by most that auto racing is a sport. We don't have a "sport" forum (at a site with a majority of men visiting, beats the hell out of me
This question was raised once before and I think many voiced their opinion. Now we all know there are many forums here to try to appease everybody. I for one would have left the 1 auto racing post, "The Big Race", because it is not often that auto racing is a topic. I think that it was a hot topic because it was the start of the Nascar season. Then a few other threads started popping up about racing and then somebody questioned, "shouldn't this be in the autos thread?". So to keep everybody happy. ;D,  I moved them all to the autos section.
I hope you understand. In the time I have been here, I actually have never even seen the races discussed except on an occasion or two. I know the Home Brew Cockpit, The Music and History forums were recently added. Contact Pete and see if it would fly.
I am sure if you wanted to start a thread about baseball etc..., people would welcome it. I know that when the Football season started, there were a few threads running on it.
Just to sum this up, when Pete said to me, "When deciding what to do with a post, just use common sense". So I guess if there is an Auto Forum, that is where it should go.
I don't know maybe a bad idea but one too put some thought into!!!! It will be the only way for someone to know where to post items on sports!
It is not a bad idea fret.....This is how we all communicate.
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks for your input Fret!  ;D

Well, lets see:  Auto racing involves cars, and topics about cars go in the auto forum.  That forum was created by request of members and because so many people wanted to talk about cars, Pete created it.  So that's the way it is.

You know it's getting a bit old hearing about how we have too many forums, or they're not specific enough.  Other forums on the web accept little or no input from their members about the content.  Pete goes out of his way to make this forum what everybody wants.  He changes it, shrinks it, expands it, according to the wishes of the members, not his ego.  So everyone needs to just chill out and quit complaining about minor problems.

BTW, this should have been posted in "Site Feedback", or "Suggestions for these Forums"  ::)

Well the autos forum was originally created for all road and race vehicles with wheels, and that is how we mods treat them.
If you look to the early days of the forum you'll find threads on go-karts, and motorbikes as well. Basically if it runs on wheels and has an internal combustion engine then it belongs in the auto forum.
Anyone wishing to argue should look to invest in some serious stain removing products, cos I've still got a Marmalade Big-Boy sitting around at home ;) ;D ;D ;D

I'll give an example of why I think there are too many categories & then I'll keep quiet. Suppose we went along with Fret's suggestion for a Sports forum. Not a bad idea but being generally uninterested in sport I would rarely, if ever, contribute or even visit that particular board. Unless it was about motor racing which we all seem to agree is a sport. But hang on, wait a minute :o - racing cars also come under the category of Autos, so where is the correct place to post a topic on the subject? ???

This is the point I'm trying too make!
I never go to the Autos forum unless a post elsewhere has been moved to it. I'm like you I don't care to much for cars so why go there? I do however have a passion for motor sports.
I also don't care about any other sports, but again I love motorsports!
This is the reason I mentioned it might be a good idea to have a "sports" forum that covers all form of sport from auto racing to skeet shooting, everything.
And Hagar you can obviously see what I'm talking about the confusion that to many forums can cause, as far as where do you post it. "Do you post it in sports or autos"?

Pippin- I made it clear as to why I didn't put this in site feedback in my original post. Becuase I posted this as more of a question than feedback on the site, I was curious as to others opinions on it. Not to mention no-one would have probably seen it there :)

I'll make this clear now, I too belive we probably have to many forums this has been disscussed in the past. Many we have now I don't visit unless I'm directed to it.
I give Pete credit for the job he does here!! It can't be easy and I'm the last person that would want to make it any harder on him . But the thought that sports is a big subject of many postings in the forums and might deserve its own place was just that a thought. I respect the fact that these forums are as broad as they are, I know of no other where I can talk about anything from flying to feeble threats of marmalade bombs anywhere, that is why I love this place!!!!
And just because I can't help myself I'll give Ozzy a little sarcasim before the marmalade hit :)
" Basically if it runs on wheels and has an internal combustion engine then it belongs in the auto forum. "

You just described airplanes! (before raising the gear)!  ;D ;D ;D
Now I'm really confused as too where I post things!

I hope marmalade tastes good ;D ;D

Well then perhaps you ought to start visiting the proper forum for your interest instead of complaining about how everyone else doesn't post theirs in the wrong place too...

Ruffled feathers?
I didn't mean too have this post to come out sounding like a complaint! as I have stated many times before I have a hard time saying what I mean, sorry to have made myself sound like I'm bitching!
I meant it as a post for opinions on if there should be a seperate forum for sports in general, and also too give a little insight too those here who have a hard time understanding why some of their post get moved (especially newer members) which is why I started this in the first place. Hoping that after reading some replies others might understand the reasoning behind their post being moved from one place to another. And also to try and make it easier on the Mods.
If I wanted to complain I guess I could complain about why your Monster Truck post still resides in this forum, and  if you knew better, that is where (in the auto forum) you should have posted it in the first place. (I think my point about the confusion has once again made itself clear ;)  )
I'm not complaining, maybe I should have started this topic as a poll instead to avoid any confusion. ;)

Just think,.....
When your post gets moved it is now in two forums!
Wow, what coverage! Now you are really getting your word out there.
It is like advertising!

No, you are correct.  I over-reacted and I had no room to talk.  That post pretty much makes me a hypocrite and I think I'll shut up for a bit... :-[ :-X :'( :-* :)
