Australia, Please

After High School, I plan to take a year off and will take advantage of this to go somewhere else in this mad ol' world of ours.  Then I'll try to get in the USAF, although the more I "comprehend" war (if such a feat is possible) the less I want to be a part of it.  I still love bombs and such just as much as I did when I was four years old, but it's what's done with those bombs that's beginning to sink in.  It's not as if you're shooting chocolate bunnies...  Though the tankers and C-130s still need pilots too, so it's not a guarantee that they'll stick me in a F-18 or a B-52 or such.

Anyway, I've always thought when you go somewhere you should learn the language, and so far I know Spanish, English and am learning German.  I've never liked the ROmantic languages, so I'm down to English and German.  I had planned to go to Australia, but my mom says it's quite hard to get a visa to Australia, and even then the plane ticket isn't pocket change either.  If Australia fails, I'll just have to go to Germany or England, although that ain't bad either (Except England, who wants that stoopid island! ).  Are there any Australians here that could give me a few tips on getting into Australia without donning SCUBA gear?...

I think Scorp is trying to wind us up. I'm wise to his little tricks & wasn't going to take the bait.

Anyway, I've always thought when you go somewhere you should learn the language, and so far I know Spanish, English and am learning German.  

Scorp. Most people in Europe speak English better than I do. You only have to look round this forum to see that. Providing you at least make an effort to converse in their language they will usually be happy to speak in English.

Actually if you speak English and German then the following are all good options;
The UK
Republic of Ireland
Germany
Austria
Holland (most people speak English and German there, and if you can speak those two then Dutch is quite easy)

Realistically speaking, the more I consider this, the more Europe is becoming the more feasible option.  The problem with Germany is I just don't think I'm ready for it.  I've only got German II half done (and shakily at that) and most of it consists of silly little things like, "Nein, die Panzer!"

If I go to an English speaking country, I'm naturally going to try to hide my dialect and such.  I don't like to be treated different, even if it's for the better. (Sounds a bit communist you might say! ) So I'd have to pick up all those funny little words like, lift, trouser, aeroplane and lorry.  And bugger too.

I think I'll have to consider your dreary little rainy island after all!

I had thought about that.  While I of course want to see some of the famous buildings in London (or wherever I end up going) I think it's better to stay in a town rather than a city, as most cities around the world are all globalized, defeating the purpose of learning another country's culture.

Goes down well with the ladies huh?  Well, that won't stay, after they see a fly fly out of my wallet! You might get a good view of the back of her head as she walks away to find more "prosperous" interests. Anyway, I remember my Scottish friend speaking perfect American english, and it would've been a lot neater if he would've spoken "Scottish" instead.  Although he was probably like me (hence why we were freinds), so he didn't want special treatment for those reasons.

Fozzer?  Well I think there's a little bit of Fozzer everywhere if you know what I mean...

German accent works fine...just not in Germany.

Scorp, I'd suggest Germany as  a destination. I had a great time there myself...but 4 years is probably more time than you have to invest. Germany is in a nice, central location in Europe...this gives lots of chances at interesting side trips.

One thing you shouldn't do is try to hide your accent...the locals will be on to you in a flash. Half will think your a fake, the other half will think you're trying to take the mickey out of them.
