A woman traveling from New York to Denver on Spirit Airlines said she accidentally took a stun gun and knife onto the plane in her carry on bag, the airline and transportation security officials said.

The mind boggles but I can't say this surprises me. ::)

Is this what the well-dressed woman-about-town regards as an essential accessory these days? ???

In New York she'd be classified as underdressed with only those!!!

Reassuring isn't it? As I said in a post awhile ago it seems the tighter they make security the more gets through!!

Could it be possiable that because she was a woman she wasn't searched as well as the other passengers
???
But come on, I can see maybe getting by with nail clippers or something but a stun gun. That just shows the lack of training the "security personel" have!
Next you'll have them asking for more money. Because thier job is so difficult.

This is precisely the point I was trying to make in another thread. There is no point in introducing new security measures if the old (& most important) ones are not carried out properly. It seems to me that they are not taking it seriously enough. ::)

AGREE 100% !!!
They are focusing more on new preventive measures than concentrating on the actual security itself!!!

Simple is best...

When returning from Norway a few years back, the same two ladies did the check-in, were the security, and checked boarding passes.

At Dagali airport, the security involved these two women checking everybody's hand luggage by hand, whilst you walked through a detector. I assume they had a scanner for the hold luggage (they can't have hand checked those!).

Thankfully we were only on a BAe 146 so there weren't that many of us.  :)

The attitude of the security people can make a big difference. This reminds me of my first trip to the US some 15 years ago. It was the first time I had travelled abroad for some time so I'd never come across one of these detector gizmos before. Sure enough, I set off the alarms at Gatwick & felt like a complete idiot. Apart from my obvious embarrassment I was not made to feel like a criminal but told to check my pockets for coins & other objects that could possibly have set it off & try again. I had to go through 3 or 4 times before I finally made it. This was all done in a highly professional but friendly manner. I'd learned my lesson & since then whenever I go through one of these things I take great care that it will never happen again if I can help it.

Although there was no similar check in place at the US end at the time I found the attitude of the immigration officers extremely hostile & unfriendly. I was looking forward to a relaxing holiday with my daughter & did not expect to be treated like this at all. This was long before 9/11 so goodness only knows what it's like now. I'm not too keen on finding out. Knowing me I would most likely be arrested or sent straight back home. :o

The inevitable delays caused by security checks can be made much more acceptable for normal passengers if they're treated like human beings & not suspects. I think the US security people need to realise this. Maybe they should be trained in countries that have been dealing with this sort of thing for years. ::)

PS. I should mention that after passing through immigration I have always been made most welcome in the US. ;)

At least in England your caught before boarding ;)

Man With Cleaver Arrested at U.K. Airport

LONDON (AP) - A man was arrested for having a meat cleaver at an airport in northern England, police said Monday.

The 31-year-old was arrested at Humberside Airport on Sunday, a police spokesman said, adding that the suspect had been due to board a flight for Amsterdam.

The man was taken to a police station in the nearby town of Scunthorpe for questioning, the spokesman said. No other details were immediately available.

Precisely my point. Our people have been doing this for considerably longer than yours so I imagine they're used to the equipment by now. Mind you, I don't suppose a meat cleaver was particularly difficult to detect. :o I've never seen a stun gun but I would have thought the same would apply to that. ::)

I don't know if it would have made the news over there but they picked up a man at Heathrow a few days ago with 5 bullets in his pocket. He boarded the aircraft in Washington DC. I find this a tad worrying. ::)

Yes I read the story of the guy with the bullets.
Something else I have noticed is that these security breeches are happening at the airports that security is the tightest (too use the word loosely!). Makes you stop and think.

Sorry Craig but every time you use the word "to" when you mean "too" I find myself wondering - looks very similar to what? ??? I know perfectly well what you meant this time but it can get a tad confusing old chap. :P
