*Sigh* I just got that email today, But I'm not stupid so I NEVER open any attachments AT ALL. If you want to send me somthing you'd better have Facsimile over radio or my secret E-mail address that filters out any E-mails without my "Secret Word" in the subject line.

I don't open anything if it is not from a regular sender anymore, and even then I many times don't even open attachments, I just had a virus a couple of weeks ago, but my anti-virus program snagged it and got rid of it promptly, can't be too careful.
Still no linked images allowed around here Paz! Naughty...

Unless it has an appropriate subject line any mail I receive without recognising the sender is deleted immediately without reading it. If this means I delete genuine mails from people seeking help, which I'm sure I do, I apologise but it's hard luck. I never open attachments from people I don't know. Even then I treat them with suspicion.

I thought that is what the "code" meant. But it would be better typed 773H, or 7734 (depending on how your numerals are displayed)

Any how, I was checking my emails after work yesterday and noticed that myself (fretnstuff) sent a email from a unknown location.
This is why these things spread so fast. They use names and addresses from your address book! To make the email look like it is from someone familar.
If I didn't know this there are many times that I might have opened something bogus!
I just wish I could get this through my mothers head!!
Just last week she opened a email from "fretnstuff@inyourdreams.net", it had a virus but the antivirus caught it. Then she went to bitching about me sending her a virus!! That is when I told her, all you saw was my name and didn't pay attention to the address in which it came!!
Too all: Becarefull!!

A little advice from someone who receives at least 100 virus's every day:

& remember - you don't need to open an email attachment- virus for it to embed itself into your system. Many virus's are not even 'attached' they are hidden inside the HTML code (I collect all email as TEXT - not HTML)

As always - the number 1 rule of PC use.

Have an up to date Anti Virus utility running at all times!

I have often wondered this, If a infected email is recieved as "text" instead of HTML can it still get in your system?
Meaning that if I have my email program set to show email only in text, can the virus still get in my system?
I have also had someone tell me that you don't even need to open the mail, not to mention the attachment. I was told that as soon as your email program retrives the email from the server that it is in your system. Is there any truth in that?

I know what it meant but I have enough problems figuring out typos & spelling mistakes without deciphering code as well. :P ;D

If you need to use swear words go ahead & use them. Don't mess around trying to diguise them by using code instead. When they're deciphered they will be just as offensive to anyone likely to take offence so what's the point? ???

I've been known to swear profusely on appropriate occasions but I was taught that people swear because they don't know any better. I doubt that many people would find the word hell offensive these days. I suggest it would be much better to use an alternative word which is usually more descriptive anyway. ;)

I've heard that it's far safer to received email as txt. If you think about it it makes sense:
HTML pages are often cached (not all but many are - don't know why this is..) somewhere in the Windows directory on your PC &/or under - Documents & Stettings\You\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

As far as I know txt files are not cached but are simply read without being integrated anywhere else on your system.

So - Like I said earlier - you certainly don't need to open an email for it to infect your system & many virus's are in the HTML code - not 'attached'

Again - the bottom line & golden rule is ANTI VIRUS. He/she  who doesn't use it can only ever blame him/her self - for being criminally naive  ;).

hmmm, I have been very lucky as to never have a virus per se, I actually found 18 on a hard drive that I was pulling files off of for a friend, but my anti virus caught them all and disinfected them. ..  ;)
