7 hours of hell...

Postby Wing Nut » Sat Jan 24, 2004 12:33 pm

I bought a new computer desk the yesterday.  Big mistake.  Silly me, I thought I might save a few bucks and get a kit I'd assemble myself from a local hardware store that included the hutch and a side table.  I will never do this again!  from now on, I am going straight to Office Depot where they'll deliver up three flights of stairs for me AND assemble the damn thing.  We started last night about 8:00 with pizza and soda to make it a party, and about 11:30 decided we had had enough and went to bed.  About 8:00 this morning, I got up feeling like I had been run over by a truck.  I was so sore, I could barely stand.  I was fine until I got up, but then the soreness hit me.  So from about 8:30 to 11:00 (again!) I have been finishing the desk.  Not only were some of the screws too long, so they poked through the shelving, the damn thing weighs a ton and I have no idea how we're going to move it with the computer on it.  I also have to go out and buy new cables because now the old ones aren't long enough to reach around the desk to the back!

NEVER AGAIN!

Sucks to be you!  ;) Sorry about your luck...Sounds like what I usually have to deal with as we get the same kind of furniture... :D

Just be careful after a few days the screws will start to fall out, and your computer will be on the floor, well if it is in anyway related to the computer desk that my mom/sisters put together a year or two ago...:-)

luckily nothing was damaged, just dented... >:( ;)

Hmmm. 7 hours..........! :o Maybe PC World ain't so bad after all. All my stuff came from there. The instructions are a tad difficult to understand sometimes but I never had a problem yet. Maybe my engineering training helps. LOL :P ;)

This is why I'm glad God gave me woodworking skills!!! :)
I build all my furnishings.
I'm currently building a Walnut and maple computer center.
It will have a granite top.
Sucker will be heavy but I hope in the end it will be something to be proud of! :)
I'll post some pics when finished and then I'll take orders  ;D

I have built many of these things, never had too much of a problem, but then again I have been building things for a living for many years, and building things for fun for many years also.
Hey Pip, was it a Sauder or an Ameriwood product? or some other manufacturerer?
Still no linked images allowed around here Paz! Naughty...

These things have names?  ???  I don't think it was either actually, but I didn't keep the box.

I'm reasonably intelligent and I could fake my way around a woodshop good enough, I guess, but no one will ever call me Bob Villa.  If I can rebuild a 68 Mustang (minus the major work, like welding and such) and build a computer, I should be able to do this.  I sat back and asked myself if it was me or the kit, and I don't think it was me.

Or maybe I'm just to old for this $hit...

Well there is your problem!
You use pieces of the box for shims to make your sides thicker, then your screws won't pop out.
You then build the desk on top of the cardboard then you can just pull it to it's final location.
Geez! I thought everyone knew that!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

P.S. Another reason to keep the box is because you can use the cardboard as good kindling for when you are ready to burn the S.O.B !  ;D ;D

Hi

Studying the original post, there are some interesting definitions hidden in there. ;D 'Pizza, party, soreness, run over by a truck, fine till I got up, barely stand.'

This is exactly how I felt this morning ;D It is funny how we act in different countries. In the UK, only one definition of thes words.....Hangover ;D ;D then the  immortal words...'NEVER AGAIN.'.....

See you later when I have sobered up.....arrrrggghhhh!!
My Head :'(
