I've picked it up Waterstones a couple of times, but haven't got round to buying it yet - I take it that it is well recommended?
Go out & get it immediately. If you're anything like Ozzy & me (& Woody) you won't be able to put it down. I've read the biographies of most BoB fighter pilots on both sides at some time. "First Light" is one of the best. It's extremely well written & manages to capture the spirit & schoolboy sense of humour of those days. This didn't seem that much different to what it is now & I could imagine young boys of today being just the same. Geoffrey Wellum was straight out of school & 17 years old when he joined the RAF in 1939. A few months later he was flying Spitfires in combat against the Luftwaffe.
It also gives a unique insight into the training that I don't remember in other accounts. I learned a lot of things that I've never seen mentioned before. The fact that it took him some 50 years to write from notes scribbled on small pieces of paper throughout WWII makes it almost unique for this type of book. So many WWII aces were rushed into print soon after the war had ended with somewhat dubious ghost-written biogs which had to be rewritten properly many years later. He has another book in him & I'm hoping he's working on it now & lives long enough to complete it. I, for one, can't wait to get my hands on "Second Light".
Yes. I suppose you could say I highly recommend it.
