I doubt that I ever will have any side effects of improper running.

My dad told that the best way to run is by running on your toes and never on the heel of your foot. That way, you can run for a pretty long time without any problems.

I took my dad's advice because he was in the AMN [Academia Militar de Nicaragua] and they usually forced him to run a ton of miles during the worst weather conditions. And when I tried my dad's advice, I was surprised to see how far I could go without getting tired. And I still do it and love it.

Durring the Marathon runs [and I saw this in the The Learning Channel], there is this guy who runs all the time ON HIS BARE FEET and has never had any problems. Not only that, the guy looks middle-aged or beyond.

This guy also advises to run on your toes. And he does it all the time.

Back then, I use to run on my heels. However, I quit running because I got tired quickly. After that, I took my dad's advice and I started to run a whole lot better.

I have been running 3 miles everyday for the last half month so that I can stay in shape.

I always run around a block that has a perimeter of 3 miles in total. It would take me about 15 minutes if I didn't have to walk across some small streets with heavy traffic.

Right now, I'm getting use to it since I can now run up to 1.5 miles whithout getting tired and in almost under 7 minutes. I still run a lot the rest of the way.

How many miles do you like to run?

I know someone who is crazy enough to run 14 miles and still love it. ::)

At West Point I was a horrible runner, but I worked hard enough to get my 2 mile time down to 15:50 which is just above passing.  To do this I ran about 4 miles a day for a month before our APFT.  Now, I'm down to about 1 mile a day on days when I don't have ice hockey practice.  I know people who run at least 10 a day.  It gets to a point when running makes your more energized and exhilirated.  personally, i find marathon runner insane.

But you know what they say-- why is PT so good?  because it's free.

I've never taken running seriously. Though I find I can run faster over long disances that most who do. However not being able to run a long way is no big problem for me. Almost all the activities I enjoy require more upper body strength. But then, as I havn't lifted anything heavier than my school bag for four months, I don't have much of that left. ;D

Ah well, I pile on the muscles every summer, lose em for the winter. ;D

the main reason i try to stick to cross country is the effect of road running. if you dont own a good pair of shock absorbing shoes, it will slowly wear away the meniscus in your knees(i know this from personal experiance) where possible try to keep to grass.

I always prefer walking on grass or dirt to tarmac. You can feel the difference in your knees.

I say again.

Don't ever run on your heels. Run on your toes. It will relieve the painful forces excerted on your legs and back as you run.

Not only that, running on toes will feel like an extra suspension. Every time you land on your toes, your heel won't die on you because your toes are relieving the pressure as you land.

However, you have to stretch a lot before running. This is because running on your toes will mean that you calves will be doing some work as you run.

Also, you have to control your beathing as well. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Also, set a pace for your breathing.

lol i know all the tips tricks and hints for running, i was a dedicated runner for years, eventually becoming the best runner in my high school. out running my coach, and also at one point the fastest in my age group in southern england. in the end though just the sheer amount of running had taken its toll on my knees, and no amount of stretching no amount of running on toes could help:)
you just gotta be careful and take care from the start and never let it slip. and dont go overboard

That's why I never plan on running more than 3-4 miles per day.

I always run a few miles per day and I am not crazy like a lot of people that I know who run 10-14 miles per day.

Always take things little by little. Remember, no one here is every going to be like Forest Gump. Except maybe Tom Hanks. ;) ;D ::)

Ooops sorry Fret, I forgot you use fag for something else in the US. Do you know the funny story about the faggots?
Apparently this is a true story, but an American serviceman had been posted to the UK back in the 80's, and been told how soft and pinko Britain was (whoever told him hadn't known of Margret Thatcher!).
So he went to this cafe one day for a bite to eat, and asked what was available. The waitress listed a number of things including faggots & chips. Horrified he asked what they did with the faggot and she replied "Cook them"
"Right on!!!" came the reply. Seems no-one had told him in Britain that a faggot is a kind of meatball ;D
I wish I could have been a fly-on-the-wall when he got home and started telling people the British cooked their faggots ;D ;D ;D

Speaking from many years of experience, smoking while riding a push-bike is not advisable. If you smoke tailor-mades they burn down far too quickly & you will end up with severe burns to your lips (or fingers if you prefer holding them in between drags). This can have serious consequences not to mention sparks & ash flying everywhere, usually ending up in your eyes. This is not only extremely painful but also has the effect of temporarily blinding you with the inevitable results. Smoking while wearing gloves is difficult & usually results in your best pair of gloves ending up full of holes & rendering them useless.

Roll-ups keep going out which involves relighting them on a regular basis. If you've ever tried lighting a fag while riding a bike you will realise that this is not only almost impossible but also highly dangerous. ::)

If you wish to smoke at all during the journey the only practical solution is Will's smoke breaks. ;)

Or perhaps purchase one of those moto-cross helmets, as they have the v.long chin bit, and I'm sure you could squeeze a roll-up in there and it'd be protected from the wind :)

Not a bad idea at all & I'm sure it's already been tried. On the whole, smokers are a crafty bunch & will come up with all sorts of ingenious ideas in order to carry on with their disgusting habit. I remember some years ago a character named Alf Heskins who worked at Shoreham. Alf had worked there for so many years he had become part of the establishment. Even the management were scared of him. He was actually very talented & could do almost any job on an aircraft you care to mention. One day I saw him spraying an aircraft with a fag sticking out of a hole he had made in his face mask. :o

Sorry to go off-topic but I still giggle about how ridiculous this was whenever I think about it. LOL

LOL Either you're more talented than the average smoker or there was no wind - OR you could just be plain lucky. :P ;D

Attempting to smoke while cycling into a strong gusty wind is particularly hazardous in my own experience. :o
Why is it that when cycling the wind is almost always against you, no matter which direction you're heading. ? ???
