On PC crap - here in Florida a Spanish teacher was disciplined for writing the word "negro" on the blackboard. ... The fact that she was teaching her students how to write and say the basic COLORS in Spanish was no impediment to being chastized.

I CAN understand the debate on changing the terms "master"/"slave" to "primary"/"secondary" when referring to multiple hard drives, if only because it makes a bit more sense to ME.

On the whole, however, the obsession with PC is getting - if it hasn't already gotten - out of hand.  Yes, I can agree to avoiding certain words that are clearly offensive (the dreaded "N" word, spic, wetback, etc) and have no other purpose than to denigrate.

I have to think some of these stories are hyperbole (black coffee, negro in Spanish) but I have read the master/slave story myself do I know that one is true.

I find master/slave to be a perfectly acceptable expression of the relationship between 2 hard drives.  After all, one has complete control over the other, doesn't it?  Is the word slave to be outlawed except in reference to an ancient, outlawed abhorrent practice?  I don't want to get off on a rant but slavery was the norm for several thousand years.  It has only been outlawed for 150 years, more a result of the industrial revolution than of enlightened minds.

The interesting thing about new PC terms is that as soon as one is invented someone publicizes it and it is immediately held up to the ridicule it deserves.

Not sure what night, but there was an article in the Herald this week. Also in the run up to Christmas there was a row over cards issued by the Scottish parlement to each constituency, the cards were recalled and replaced with others stating "Seasons greatings", red cross charity shops were also banned from displaying any form of christmass decorations for fear of offending the Muslim population.

I know some of these stories are true as I've experienced it myself. In fact some, like the baa, baa green sheep & the blackboards go back a few years to when my daughter was at school. She's a mature woman now.

This made me think of the fact that most engineering terms refer to natural things like parts of the body & some have a sexual connotation. I recall a secretary who worked for me some time ago who was genuinely offended by some of these words. We had a supplier at one time named Saunders Cocks Ltd that manufactured fuel cocks or valves & other components for aircraft. This company had been in business for some considerable time & its history went back at least to before WWII. Despite me showing her paperwork & maintenance manuals for their products this particular lady refused to talk to them on the phone or even type the company name on an order. Rather than embarrass her I had to get someone else to do it.

The company eventually changed its name & traded as the Saunders Valve Co for a while until, if I remember correctly, it was taken over by Flight Refuelling Ltd.

The same people that are so concerned about offending others to the point of rendering a perfectly good language obsolete, endanger traditions, religious beliefs,cost people their jobs, destroy careers, will turn right around and crucify fat people, country folk (supposed rednecks), Republicans, French, Arabs, Blondes and or Americans. I'm not sure (and havent' bothered to check) what the actual definition of "Politically Correct" is.....maybe something like "over/hyper-sensitivity to the thoughts and feelings of other people"....as if you were running for office and were afraid of offending anyone!

I think the problem most people have with PCness is when it's carried to extremes. For example, PCness in the extreme would dictate that one should never use 'the N-word'.....it's too abhorrent and degrading a term for some people, to even allow it's verbalization (or be written), regardless of the user's intentions. This was carried to a ridiculous extreme in 1995 during the "OJ trial", where the race issue was being so delicately treated, that it seemed as if a double-murder was not as offensive as someone uttering the 'N-word'.

I doubt that most anti-PCers favor outright crude and ill-mannered speech in public (though maybe some do). I think it's more of a back-lash against extremism like censorship and reverse discrimination.
