I am hoping someone here has had the same problem, and can help.
My PS2 has for no reason stopped reading discs, i am not getting a disc read error, and i believe after opening it and looking at it the Drive motors gone, it trys to read it for 1/2 a second then stops, with a disc it spins slowly stops, without it spins faster but still for one a few seconds. which leads me to think its the motor, i have tried to clean the lens to no avail.
Has anyone here suffered same problem?
I cant afford the repair costs or the cost of a new one, and i am stuck without it as its also my sole DVD player.

When my CD drive was dying on my PC I found that a hefty whack on the side of the tower with the palm of my hand would kick it in to life again. This might not work in your case. But as the saying goes "anything mechanical, give it a good whack."

Yes Craig, the same thing with mine. Sometimes it will play a DVD for 10-15 min. but then just stops and the picture just freezes. I think I got one of the early versions that they were scambling to Mfg. and were made with whatever they had on the shelf.
My geuss is the DVD drive is just cheap, or of substandard Mfg.

How old is your PS2? (Years or months)

its about 16 months old.
Bought at a local computer store
I gotta agree with saber on this, early ones were just thrown together, looks like i was unlucky to get one of those.
I wouldnt get an X-box Daz,they dont have a great list of the games i like and the sound isnt as crisp as the PS2.

 The earlier PS2's were crap, my brother is on his third one and I am on my second one, but the most recent ones seem to be holding up quite well, when my brother checked on getting his repaired it was going to cost nearly the price of a new one.
 He also owns an X-Box but rarely plays it, even with all the trouble he's had with the PS2's, he still prefers it over the X-Box.

Woody's cure is to be highly recommended when all else fails... ...!
It may not get your system working again like it did when you first got it, but when it goes faulty, the satisfaction of seeing it reduced to tiny fragments on the floor, sweeping it all up and emptying it into the dust-bin, after giving it a good kicking, is eminently mere enjoyable than actually trying, and failing, to get it to work in the first place... ...!

Frankly I dont even play anything on it anymore, ever since I graduated to the PC, console games just didnt seem a good value. I slowly lost interest over a few weeks, thos I still used it to watch DVD's. But yep, I just about was ready to knock it clean off the self last week, cuz I really wanted to see this movie, but then I thought HEY!,..................I have a S-video output on my vid card, so I just connected it up to the TV, and Ahh hahhh!  :P

I could never get my s-video to work well with the tv, it would show the bios, all the way up to windows xp loading screen (black background with white status bar) then the screen went black I wanted to play games on the 36 inch screen at least once!

Well it's not as simle as just hooking up the cable, you have set it up in your display settings and have the TV set as a second monitor and then "clone" your desktop to the TV. At least that's what I remember about how I did it. Look in your cards manual to see it's specific instructions on doing this. My card is a Nivida Geforce4 Ti4200 AGP 8X. And I think I had to use it's "Nview" program to set this up.
