The idiot list grows!

Postby Politically Incorrect » Sat Jan 17, 2004 6:16 am

Once again another one makes the news!

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Northeast/01 ... index.html

Whit all the bad media attention that General Aviation has been getting as of late, this one here doesn't help us in are battle of keeping General Aviation out of the Government strong hold!
They have been reporting that they now want to start increaseing security at smaller airports. I just went to one of my local airports where I take lessons and they have everyting gated up. I had to show my ID and everything even though everyone there knows who I am!!!!
They said "well its new procedure", well I'm the same person I was two days ago!! It went from "Hey Jeff how you doing?" To "ID please"!
I proud to be a member of A.O.P.A., they are the strongest voice for GA pilots and are making a stand against this stupidity!
They are also going to start to limit new pilot trainees!!
So if you haven't started you better soon!!!!!!!!!
Then at least you might be able to be "Grandfathered" when the new policies take effect!

Fret. I would have to disagree strongly with you on the subject of your link. This pilot was over the alcohol limit for driving a car & therefore should not be allowed to be in control of an aircraft. I have always belived that alcohol & aircraft (or cars for that matter) do not mix. If you intend flying do not drink. This was drummed into me by my boss in my first job in aviation, a highly experienced & respected flying instructor who religiously applied this rule to himself.

On your other points I tend to agree. I would hope that this practice is never adopted here. I'm reasonably confidient it won't. ::)

hmmm, another person ruining it for the rest of us.

as for limiting pilots, Why? what does it accomplish, it'll hit the airlines hard in the future when there are no new pilots to fly for them, not everyone who learns to fly can afford to go all the way to airline pilot level. So they accept so many thousands where only a couple of hundred could afford to go that far. Of those only say 30 decide to actually go there because of all these stupid rules, airlines may need say 150 new pilots, gonna go short.

we all know what needs to be done to start the change, however it wont happen,

Craig. I would point out that the majority of private pilots have no desire whatever to get a commercial licence or fly for an airline. From what I can make out, these proposed restrictions are intended to limit the number of private pilots. This in fact might have the opposite effect to what you're suggesting & the airlines would set up their own training schemes.

Of course, this depends on how many new commercial pilots are required in future. If things continue in the way they're going the general public will lose all faith in the industry & find alternative means of travel. ::)

Sorry I'm not sure what your disagreeing with?
I posted the link to the "idiot" story and then went off on a rant about another subject, sorry :)
Do you disagree that this guy is a idiot?
I belive anyone who consumes drugs or alcohol and the gets in any type of vehicle and puts others in harms way is a IDIOT!!
I also think if "found" guilty he should not only lose his PPL, but do some major time in prison. Just think of what could have happened when he was flying into airport airspace and didn't see the Boeing on his right?
I think "drunken flying" charges should be more extreme than they are, because flying drunk you risk the lives of 100's of people in the air and on the ground!

No I don't disagree with that at all. It's what I've always passionately believed in. Sorry, I must have missed the point of your topic. I though you were referring to the fact this man was prosecuted & the new security restrictions as idiocy. ::)

PS. The latter I WOULD agree with.

Sometimes my points don't come across well because I'll start with one then end with another :-[
But as far as the restrictions and so forth I think they are definately being taken to the extreme!!
The reason I put this idiot on the same topic as the newly inforced restrictions is because this guy will add fuel to the fire.
Meaning that it seems that the media in general have been doing thier best to deface general aviation, make it look like a bad thing. You never see or read any stories about the good. The 911 attacks caused the media to focus on GA almost putting the blame on it for what has happened and staying away from the fact that the security personel at the time were either improperly trained or just didn't give a crap. I have heard actual quotes of people including Government officials state "If it wasn't so easy to get in the cockpit to learn to fly, these attacks would have never have happened" If I can find the name of the guy that said that I'll let you know, I don't remember off hand but the quote sticks in my mind! I guess that is the typical way to expect the Government to act point a finger on the weak to take the blame for a mistake that should have never been made.
So whenever I read or hear stories about some moron going off and doing something stupid I know it will just give people a reason to think that there is no point in GA and make them want to abolish it completely. Which will probably never happen but it is sure making it more difficult for the "good" people to persue a dream!!

I have to agree with everything in your last post. However, the alcohol issue is not confined to General Aviation. I remember the recent case of a senior Virgin Atlantic captain being arrested for reporting for duty over the alcohol limit. To my mind he should not have been drinking at all but that's not my decision.

The media will continue to dig up all the dirt on the aviation industry for the foreseeable future. This makes it even more important for anyone involved with aviation to be careful. Otherwise our freedom to enjoy our hobby will be severely curtailed. This will also affect the aviation industry as a whole.

read "dude, where's my country?" from michael moore and you'll see that this is just the tip of the iceberg, which stands for "the war on terror" and "security for america"...

He came from a few miles from where i grew up in Saginaw MI. Although I don't agree with some of his stuff he does make some good points about others. He has made millions of dollars based on the stupidity of our Government and Politicians alone. So you have to give credit where credit is do, because he speaks out when most will clam up!

I haven't even read any of the replies to this, but I do have an opinion.

That person should not have been in control of a moving object at the time of his demise.  0.13 on a BAC test is way too high for flying.  In the US, if you have over 0.08 BAC, you are charged with driving under the influence and taken to JAIL!

I have tried flying FS while drunk, and it isn't a pretty picture.  I can't imagine trying the real thing in that state.

I'm sorry for the individual's family and friends, but I am not necessarily sorry for the individual . . .
