It will take millenia to make Mars suitable for life.

Read the books Red Mars, Blue Mars and Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson.  Then see what you think . . . ;)

I've read "Red Pirate", "Blue Pirate", "Black Pirate", "Yellow Pirate" and "Green Pirate".

Great books, not to heavy on the plot......

What benifits did we get from going to the Moon? You simply went there, determined that it wasn't made of cheese and that there wasn't a man inside and came home again. So what benefits came from that? What was achieved by going to the moon that could have been achieved by at most, circling the world in a tin can?

Velcro. :)

Well, without going to the Moon it would have been very dificult to study the lunar surface. Robots could have done some of it...but to do it right you have to put a man on the ground.

So basically, if you are already packing your bags in readyness for your new life on Mars your in for a bit of a wait. It will take millenia to make Mars suitable for life. And thats if its possible at all.

Or, we could build domes. Domes would allow us to live on Mars while terraforming it. The terraforming process would actually be easier with people right there to make decisions.

Think of it this way:

We can try the "Green Earth" method. The only problem is that if it fails, we have no chance at another solution. Once we start down that road that resources for interplanetary travel will quickly disappear.

We can try exploration. If that fails we can try "Green Earth".

You know, I've read those books too. Long time ago though. Maybe 11 years now. So when I was five... Within four years I had read The Dam Busters, Reach for the Sky and Strike Hard, Strike Sure. Not to mention all of the Swallows and Amazons books. Find me a nine year old who can claim to have done that! ;D ;D
