How much do you tip?

Well, I usually am on the receiving end of the tipping, so when I do go out, I always tip well.  My minimum is 5 bucks, and I always tip at least 20% on anything.

I don't understand people who don't tip.  Especially at restaraunts where the people are getting paid not by the company (something like $1.50 hourly wage) but by the customers and their tips.  I have rarely encountered a waiter or waitress that wasn't any good, mainly because the way you are treated by them is directly proportional by how you treat them.  So if you treat them like they are some kind of subhuman (which happens more than you realize) they WILL be offended.  Remember, they are people too . . .

Depends how much you care about the family member, as to how well you want the surgery to go, oh and of course what you'll get in the will ;) ;D

Pip, I congratulate you on your luck.  I cannot fathom the stress and suffering you endured, but I can sure understand the idea.

I don't think I can convey my condolences via the net.  It is incredible that you underwent this and came out as noble and happy as you are.

I sincerely hope that the doctor that performed the surgery is a lifelong friend of yours, because he surely deserves it.

My best wishes for you and your family, particularly your son.

Thanks Ender, I appreciate the sentiment.  We're not exactly lifelong friends, but he's probably going to be on our Christmas list for a very long time...  ;)  The man is brilliant with what he does and has pioneered several surguries in this area and others.  His name is Dr. Frank Vicari at Children's Memorial Hospital here in Chicago.  Recently PBS did a special mini-series on the hospital and he figured prominently in several areas.

Look here for details on the show

And for Dr Vicari...

Like others have said - I tip according to the service. If I get treated well & am happy with what I get, I tip. If I get forgotten about, get no (genuine) smiles, have to wait too long, am not treated as a valuable customer at ALL times - no tip. Period. I've had to argue several times with restaurants who added the tip to the bill. If that happens - any tip I was going to leave gets wiped & I won't leave until the zero tip bill is produced. & staff who don't make an effort to give customers a great experience should be fired instantly.  ;)
I'm a firm believer in customer service & those who don't bend over backwards to give it should be working in a backroom somewhere - not on the front line ...  8)

Hi if I get bad service I just wright "3.30 Haydock park!" (race course) on the nap-kin,  ;D ;D otherwise I tip according to how good the food and service was.

yeah its baiscally down to the service... if they expect tips then im more inclined not to give tips but if they offer good service and are not pushy etc then i always leave a few quid for them.. in the uk espec at some restaurants they are paid quite well anyways. taxi drivers i tend to tip a lot aswell if there friendly and efficent at getting to your destination.. i once offered this guy an extra fiver to get me through busy traffic as not to miss a job interview... 10 minutes later i was there as he knew every side street etc there was.
