Maybe they were attempting to be humerous?
Sort of like the morning radio shows here in the States, do these "Radio personalities" really think they are funny?
Whenever they try to tell jokes they laugh and giggle so much that the joke is never told.
They will be laughing up a storm and I'll be sitting there thinking "WHAT?" , same goes for the real bad sitcoms with the laugh track that they insert because they think you are too stupid to know when something is funny and they have to remind you to laugh!! ;D

The BBC has a pronunciation department. All newsreaders are supposed to check unfamiliar names regularly to make sure they're using the "correct" pronunciation. They can get their tongues round the most unpronounceable foreign names which suggests to me that they spend a lot of their time practicing them in front of a mirror. Whether their interpretation is accurate or not is anybody's guess. ::)

The BBC pronunciation department has a nasty habit of changing the pronunciation of familiar words that have been in use for centuries. I always suspected that this their little hobby when they have nothing better to spend their time on.

Hey, I can't speak.  For the first month we lived in Modesto back in 92, we pronounced Toulomne as Too-loom-ne.  The correct pronunciation is Too-all-oh-me...  ::)

Well that's not too serious Pip. The locals often pronounce places names differently to how you would expect. I could be wrong but didn't think you're a professional broadcaster. These are the main offenders.
