Come to think of it I haven't seen Katahu for a while. Probably going through a phase or "phrase" as my dear late mother-in-law used to call it. He'll be back in good time, Im sure of it.

Katahu might have lived in the US but I don't think English was his native tongue either. Heck, French was my best subject at school but I'm ashamed to admit that I couldn't put a simple intelligible sentence together in any foreign language these days.

I can remember it took me what seemed like centuries to stop Katana using the symbol to the left of the "1" key,....(what's it called?), instead of the apostrophe symbol, on the @ key... ...!
...and you know how much I love "apostrophe's".... ...!

Realising my mistake I went & corrected it before going for a quick lie down in a darkened room - only to find on my return that you quoted my original reply. What is a man to do. Life ain't fair & no matter how hard you try sometimes you just can't win.

Have to be careful in future or people will be quoting all sorts of gibberish that I usually write. Being a rotten typist I generally edit my replies several times before they make any sense at all. It can sometimes be a matter of hours before I get it how I want it.

I'm one of the lucky ones who never had too many problems with spelling. I know immediately if a word looks wrong & if necessary paste it into a word processor for a spell check. For convenience I often use the spell checker in the AOL mail gizmo. This is fine providing I don't hit the wrong button & send it to someone.

You could do worse than follow Silent's example. English is not his mother tongue yet he puts most of us here to shame. That includes you Fozzer old bean - & me come to that.

but i'm not the only one here. look at mr.bones,ivan,omag and all the other guys,whose mother language isn't english. they speak it at least as well as me,if not even better...

With your multi-lingual talents you youngsters have a great future ahead of you. IMHO

we have no other choice. it's required by the modern society. without multilingualism (is that the right word?) ,you don't even have a chance to get very far in daily life.

From what I see you're doing just fine. Bonz always said that this forum & speaking to friends on the Internet helped a lot with his English. That surprises me a little as I see far too many mistakes made by those who have it as their first language. People like you tend to have a better command of spelling & grammar.

Unfortunately this seems to be a one way street. I'm not sure too many English or American people of your age (or any age for that matter) could speak or write in fluent German or French. Heck, to be blunt, some of 'em can't even write fluently in their own language.

Nah. I can't speak for Americans but as a proud Englishman I admit that we've always been downright arrogant in this respect. No need to learn the language old boy. If "Johnny Foreigner" doesn't understand what you're saying just shout louder until he does. LOL

From my experiences at work it always impressed me when I rang anyone in Europe. Whatever language they spoke on answering the phone they would change to fluent English without any apparent problem when I apologised for not speaking their language. This applied from humble telephone operators right up to the boss.

if i think about it ,no reason comes to my mind,why americans or englishmen should learn a foreign language,when their native language is the world's most important one,because almost everyone speaks english ,no matter where you're going.
