Paper Work!!!!!AArrrggghhh!!

Postby Katahu » Wed Nov 19, 2003 1:40 pm

Now this is hard-@55 psycological work.

My dad is an accountant and he said that his boss wants him to do some serious paperwork. However, my dad doesn't seem to handle it so he asks me for help.

He wants me to take all the info from a 45-page stack of papers that contain a long list of checks and type them into a QuickBooks program so that they can be in the database.

It may not be hard physical work, but it's hard-@55 work for the mind. And I don't know how my dad ever puts up with it for years.

The 45-page stack of papers contains a loooong-@55 list of checks. There are up to at least 2-years worth of checks. Or about over 2,400 checks. :o :o :o

In the QuickBooks program, I have to type in the date in which the check was made, the number of the check, who the check is for, and the amount of the check.

It may sound easy at first. But believe it or not, the fastest person will only be able to type in all this info in about 8 hours straight. :o :-[

Imagine, typing the same boring info over and over and over again while sitting in front of your computer doing this.

But, he promises that with the help I'm giving him, he'll pay me up to $30 for every stack of checks.

Right now, I'm on page 30 of my first stack and I started the stack one and a half days ago. ;D And after I'm done, there will be another stack waiting for me. :-[ This time, with at least 3-years worth of checks. :-[

In total, I'll get $60. Not bad.

I also have someone who owes me $50 after a serious physical work I used to do for him. ;D

That would total up to $110. :D Sweet.

Well done Katahu. It might be a tad boring but at least it's only temporary. The money will no doubt come in handy & it's also good experience of the real world. Some people do this for a living. Ask your dad. ;)

You get no sympathy from me.

That's what I spend many nights doing.

Fortunately, it's only the rare instance that a client - usually a new client - gives us that much work to do at one time.

Typically, we collect the work every month and prepare the client's statements.

Finding the needle in a haystack makes it worthwhile.  After some time, you get to know the client's spending patterns, so when something seems out of the ordinary, it probably is.  That's how we alerted a client to some funny business going on - checks were being written to cover some unusual item purchases - out of the ordinary for this client.

Oh.  I didn't mention I have a bookkeeping business?

One of my uncles is [if I can remember right] the assistant manager of a medium-sized business that sells foreign rugs. These rugs are usually expensive and huge.

The biggest rugs he sells is almost about the size of my living room and bedroom combined. :o

That most expensive rugs range at about 20,000-35,000 USD. 8)

However, his business is kind of lagging behind [by a few months]. So he asked my dad for help. My dad [again] then asked me if I can assist him.

The job I'll be given will be just like the one I was doing, but a little less stressful.

Instead of handling over 2,400 checks [about 2 years worth], I will be handling just 400+ checks [about a month's worth]. And the payment will be only $80 for every month-worth of checks I have to handle. My uncle's business is about 3 months behind. Think about it. ;)

My dad will handle the rest of the way for every set.

However, the amount of hours needed will still be a handful. But at least I won't be stress as much as before.

Ok, the money is not so bad, it's easy indoor work, and it's not too taxing mentally.  So all you have to deal with is the mind-numbing monotony of the job.  Gues what?  So does everyone else who has a job!  ;D

I do approximately 400 checks (including coding them to the correct account) in two hours - including coffee / stretch breaks ...  $40/hr pay doesn't seem bad, look at it that way.  Even if you take four hours to do the checks, that's still $20./hr.
