Why is fire fun?

Postby cub3pp » Sat Oct 11, 2003 12:09 pm

As i write this message i am playing with a butane lighter and a pop bottle(i pump the butane into the bottle then light it).  I was just wondering why are people so amazed by fire. especially americans, who not only blow up things on the 4th and 1st of jan., but also at airshows, fesivals, sporting events.  my question is WHY.  people like me know its dangerous, but does that stop us-NO.

of course, fire has its scientific advantages.  just now i learned that butane has a higher density than air.

I learned this when i pumped the butane into the bottom, then flipped the bottle over and lit it.WOW. the result was a butane rocket!

Cub I think its a case of humans being naturally attracted to things that are dangerous or forbidden. When I was at school I succeeded in blowing up a chemistry lab quite well, all the glassware went, along with the windows, the table I was using, my hearing (for 4 days), and my eyebrows!
Top tip, don't play with fire, getting burnt really hurts ;)

Hi Cub...
That certainly is an alternative to the normal, bodily, inbuilt methane gas.... ;)... ;)... ;)....!

What response do you get when someone says, "have you got a light mate"?.... :o...!

Sorry Cub.... ;D...!

Ozzy, your story reminds me off a boy in my class, who is not at all bright.

Sock are you trying to say something about us moderators? :P ;D ;D ;D
Actually the truth of the matter is that I do like chemistry, and I did pass my chemistry GCSE, but I let my enthusiasm get ahead of my common sense on this occassion, and I read this book on making explosives, but I didn't finish the chapter where it went into great detail about stability of the compounds and safety procedures!
Once my parents had paid for the damage (my mum was livid), things got back to normal. My chemistry teacher encouraged my enthusiasm, but kept a close eye on me and helped me a lot, and my dad would always crack up whenever there was an explosion on TV and make comments about me spending the weekends on movie sets! I never really lived it down ::)

Being a self confessed pyromaniac I tend to burn most things I can. Over the summer holiday I burnt no less than three boxes of matches just for the sake of burning matches.

In chemistry lessons, we were rarely trusted with the bunsen burners. And when we did the teacher had to supply us with endless amounts of magnesium just so that we would set fire to the benches. And when we did the coursework on the combustion of alcohols, well, we unscrewed the tops off the little containers, removed the wick, poured the contents over the table or your friends stuff and lit it. Presto!

We've all read at least part of the anarchists cook book right? ;D

We used to only use gasoline to get our bonfires going real good, then once we were good and drunk we would throw cupfuls of blackpowder into the inferno, it causes an awesome !POOF! blinding flash and tremendous black cloud of smoke, lot's of fun.
One of our favorite things to do during our anual 4th of July bonfire/drunkfest was to throw whole grosses of bottle rockets into the fire at once, they would shoot everywhere, if you ran away and hid you would be called a sissy-boy (or more offensive equivalent) by those of us who were brave enough to stand our ground, not very smart now that I think about it, but great drunken party fun!
Of course it goes without mentioning that we would always have a fart-lighting contest at everyone of our drunken gatherings.
Hmmmm......fire.....getting drunk....there seems to be a strong connection in my case, now that I don't drink, I also don't play with fire anymore either...go figure.
Still no linked images allowed around here Paz! Naughty...

Fire Is my favorite thing to play with  ::). I think I may know why it exploded and just burned. It exploded because it was starved of air, when it sucked air in through the mouth of the bottle it came in in a rush causing the fire to expand rapidly and "Explode". in the times it just burned did you only pump a little in? in that case it would not be as starved of air.

What can I say? I'm a pyro!

MAKES SENSE.  the time it burned i actually put more in because i burned for 30 seconds(melted the bottle)
