Life plays tricks on us, and I feel God has a strange
sense of humor!!

My brother had a terrible fear of dying in a nursing
home!! Laying there for years, rotting away!!
He did not fear death, he feared suffering!!

On Feb. 17 of this year, while doing volunteer
work at a nursing home, he had massive heart
attack and was gone in a matter of seconds!!

Spiders never bothered me until I got married. My ex was/is terrified of them & passed her fear on to me (& our daughter). I'm much like Fozzer now & encourage them as pets. Here Boris.* LOL ;D

What?

Postby Scorpiоn » Sun Aug 17, 2003 4:33 pm

Daddy Longlegs we used to call them.

Sorry Hagar but I gotta correct you there, they're definetly two different animals.

I may be wrong with the specifics, but the Crane Fly belongs to the Dipthera class and the Daddy Long Legs are, well, they're not even insects!

Thanks Hagar, although I did misspell Diptera... :'( Doesn't much matter in Texas though, most [normal] people 'round here call 'em bugs too! ;)

Yup. We're almost close neighbours. Off topic. Pity we couldn't have met up at Shoreham Airport this weekend.

On second thoughts you might never have recovered from the shock. LOL  8)

Here in Canada we call the spider "daddy long-legs" and I've always heard the crane fly refered to as "mosquito hawks"... I'm not sure why the word "hawk" is used but they do look like giant mosquitos. I've been told not to kill the crane flies because they eat mosquitos... maybe that's where the "hawk" comes from.

Did you know that if you pull a leg off of one of those long legged spiders it will continue to move on it's own for a while? Creepy.

The coolest insect is the dragonfly... they look like little helicopters. I once saw one eat a large deer-fly alive.

In Australia, the spider is a 'Daddy Long Legs' and the thing with wings that you're calling a 'Crane Fly' is known here as 'A Bloody Big Mozzie'.  ;D ;)

P.S. (from the 'Brensec Encyclopaedia of Useless Information') The daddy long legs spider has the most poisonous venom of all the spiders, but it delivers such a miniscule amount that it won't even harm a human. I have heard that their bite can be quite painful though.
Although I don't know anyone whose ever been bitten by one as they are so unaggressive.
They also keep the mozzie population down too.  ;D ;D ;)
