The Gipsy engine was installed up-side-down, (so as to afford the pilot a better view from the cockpit, but still didn't help very much 'cos the Austers were tail-draggers), and being up-side-down the oil was able to drain out of every available orifice, (which it did), wether on the ground or up in the air.... ...!
Large patches of oil were a trade-mark of Gipsy-engined aeroplanes...I could show you my oily Army overalls, but they've long since rotted away, a bit like the rags on my Austers.... ...!
...but I bet I've left many an oil stain on runways in foreign parts... ...!

Pretty much the same story with everything English. At least every English bike I ever had anything to do with (Triumph. Norton, BSA) had to leak oil, otherwise you took it back to the dealer because there was something wrong with it!..........................lol

Referred to by all & sundry as Dripsy Majors. The reason I opted to be an airframe (rather than engine) fitter.  8)

...been there, seen it, done it, ever since 1951.... ...!

I bought my first "Japanese" bike in 1984.... ...!
No more oil leaks, break-downs, plastic tyres, magneto's, dynamo's, leaky carburettors with punctured brass floats, floppy chains everywhere, 6 volt electrical systems= no lights, crankcases joined vertically (what gaskets?), naff brakes, kick-starts, (kick-stops), gravel=sliding down the road=getting out of ditches,...you name it, I've been there, from the original 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet, to the 1000cc Vincent HRD vee-twins, done it, don't EVER want to do it again... ...!
The Japs might have made a mess of Pearl Harbour, etc, but they sure made a good job of designing LOVELY super-bikes... ...!!!

I'm going to begin my flight training within the next week or so (I was going to go yesterday, but the forecast called for rain, so I postponed it...and of course it didn't rain).

As far as passenger time, I've got time in a Cessna (1 flight when I was like 4...got me hooked even then!), a few in hot air balloons, and literally thousands of hours in commercial planes ranging from the B1900D to the Boeing 777-200ER.

I have about 1/2 hour flight time earned out of Kent State University airport (1G3) in a Piper Cheyenne III on April 24th this year...signed up to take private pilot flight classes at KSU this fall if I can come up with the money... ($2,200 per credit hours with 5 credit hours!)

Do you blokes in the US have to 'sign up' for a course or something? I get this indication when people are saying things like 'Have to find $XXXX before I can ..........".

As I said I have had a TIF and will have my medical (fingers crossed, for me), shortly. But all we have to do here is buy the 'Student kit' with the log book and manual etc for $140-00, and from then on you can take 10 years to get to your GFPT if you like. Then another 5 years to get your PPL, if you choose.
I'm planning on having around 1 lesson every 2 or 3 weeks (quicker if I come across some extra $ in some way) and I can discontinue any time and take up again years later.
With a minimum of 30 hrs to get my GFPT, it will probably take over a year to get there, but that's OK.

Is it the same in the UK and US or is it, as I said, a bigger committment, short term, money wise, to go for a PPL?

I see. That's pretty cheap. The lessons here are usually the hiring cost of the plane plus about $30 or $40 for the instructor. (That's Australian dollars, of course).

Hey! it isn't too bad to get your ppl and work your way up that way, but I'm going to school to fly, and manage an airport/aviation related business...

I'm working towards a degree in aviation management with minors in flight technology, and communication studies...eventually I hope to be part of a Missionary aviation service...

Unfortunately as of right now the school doesn't accept pilot training from anywhere else...something about regulations...

Also the money gets pretty tight when one is working 15-20 hours a week to go to school...luckily this coming semester I hope to work 40-50 hours a week...we shall see!

Does this $49 include the price for plane hire, or are you just talking about the Instructor's fee?
The prices I mentioned include the plane hire.  ;D
