Is it just me?

Postby visitor » Mon Jul 21, 2003 10:58 pm

Maybe it's just me, but are we getting a lot of
new people that have no interest in flight
simulation, they just are here to "pimp"
thier hardware? There are people with
signature pics 100k+, there are screen shot
threads with 15/20 pics, must be 2/3meg,
I have a dial up and do not have an option
of anything else at this time! I tried to look at
a screen shot thread the other day, about 12
minutes to load, and half of it was photos of
a damn computor!!!
I don't know the answer, but we have rules
that need to be used in some of these cases!!
I feel this may be a reason we are losing some
real good people!
All you see is payware, payware, payware!
Why don't the people that buy the stuff go
back where they got it and post their shots
there!
I want to see some wild stunts, with stuff
that came from Simviation!!! Some good basic
flying!! People having fun, not people spending
money!!!!!
I feel Simviation is drifting away from its roots,
Freeware!!!

I'm just a "boot" here on the forum, but it seems to me that there are two basic camps. One side is going for computer excellence and enjoys the endless tweaking of software  "you can't see Lincoln's timepiece when you fly by the memorial, we need to remedy this crisis!" The other side is seeking basic aviation knowledge " this may be a dumb question, but does anyone know how to land the 747 on the
aircraft carrrier?" One thing is for sure I'm innocent, I belong to the latter group. To answer your question, as a neophyte I DO shy away from the topics that end up sounding like infommercials. I can see the tweaks reading this and laughing, " mere mortal, all your missing is a pre-hensil tail!"

Sorry to see you were KimberSensored. Maybe that'll be my first poll, a call to bring back all the little guys. 8)

Thanks for the reply, yes I can land a 747 on a
carrier, I just can't Stop!! ::) I have landed a
-8 in full realism and stopped, it is a matter of
stalling just as you climb above the rear deck!!
Trust me, this is not an exact science!!! :P
If you check back in the raw screenies you will
find a lot of fun stuff, Look for any post with the
word "bridge" or "Ozzy"!! ;D

I feel Simviation is drifting away from its roots,
Freeware!!!

It's not just you X. I've felt this way for some time. The fact that this forum has a Payware section is something I thought I would never see. In the comparatively short time I've been involved (4 years) the whole hobby has changed so it's not only Simviation. People expect so much now that it's just not possible for the ordinary guy to come up with the goods any more, with a few notable exceptions. Some people take their criticism to such lengths, even by sending the poor guys hate mail- yes, believe it or not I know several freeware developers this has happened to - that they either give up in disgust or turn to payware. Others get fed up with unscrupulous pirates stealing their work & do the same. While I'm committed to freeware, I have no objection to payware in principle, providing it's good quality, value for money & properly supported by the developers. Sadly, this is all too often not the case.

The best way to support freeware - if you find something you really like, drop the authors a line telling them how much you appreciate their work. A few kind words are a tremendous encouragement. How many of us even think of doing that?

i'll second wht hagar said.
i personally see no reason to send any sort of hate mail to a designer if the work is bad, you either just leave the plane scenery or whatever out of your sim, or you just make a few suggestions or observations, in a polite email. these guys spend god knows how many hours designing the things, time which could be spent do other things with their lives, and they do it for free. why should anyone think they should have the right to complain about that?  99% of the time you'll see some good if not great freeware, but you always get the one person who has to be an ass because it isnt perfect, and these people don even bother doing anything but complaining, they could make their own models or scenery or what not. its not like it has cost them anything

I am fully with Hagar on this one!
Recently I was involved with Grant Bovee (maker of CrashBak), he'd seen the complaints and gripes on this site in the 2k2 forum, but rather than sulk he was a man about it, sorted the complaints and then asked myself and a couple of other guys here to test it for him.
All I can say is I never thought crashing could be sooooo much fun. ;D ;D ;D
Alas it is all to rare that praise is heaped on designers, this example with Grant being an exception as those of us that did the testing all had the same opinion! Sorted ;) And we said as much on the 2k2 forum.
There just seem to be a general malaise around these days in showing gratitude, and its not limited to simming, but life in general.

Ozzy :(

PS. X with the rich megolomaniacs, when people stop stroking their egos they tend to fade away.... ;)

Please tell me where you see people with 100k sig pics or threads with over 500k images....

I just can't oversee this on my own.....

If I see this I will delete the threads..

any help is much appreciated :)

(& the reason we have a Payware forum is to separate the issue - so as not to dilute the freeware stuff.... who could argue with that?) - & I think a Payware screenshots forum may be a good idea - so people can choose to view or not view those pics -

The thing that gets me about that is that people don't realise the fantastic freeware that is here & some newbies could be fooled into thinking you need to pay to get a

There does seem to be a trend towards large sig pix nowadays. I can't quote any examples offhand. Maybe I'm a culprit in this respect.

Not arguing Pete, just making an observation. When we first started out you could count the number of reputable payware outfits on the fingers of one hand.
