Is it possible to transport weapons on a commercial flight?

I mean, say you're on holiday and you get a pistol of some sort, how do you legally get it transported onto the commercial flight? Couldn't it be surrendered to the authorities for safekeeping untill you reach your destination?

hey andrew, i belive you can transport working weapons on a commercial flight but they have to be inside a locked case and the key must remain with you at all times. the weapon also has to be declared to the local authoritys so they can check it isnt illeagal, from what i remember reading its best to always call in advance and arrive at the airport so all this can be dealt with quickly and no chance of missing a flight. and obviously said weapon must travel in the cargo hold.
i remember seeing an episode of airport where these students bought a rifle bolt as a gift and they had enough problems transporting that, then some guy managed to get this big ass shotgun checked in without any problems:)

I lived in Queensland for a short time, over 20 years ago. I had a licensed handgun then also. When I flew to Queensland and when I flew back to NSW, I had to have the weapon inspected by the Police (the state I was flying from) and they gave me a "permit to transport" which I had to then take to the airport and give to the Airline clerk, who had to get the Pilot of the flight (Captain) to counter sign.

I had to have the weapon packaged prior to going to the airport (so the clerk, pilot etc never saw the weapon - only sighted by the Police prior to my leaving) and escorted to the baggage compartment where the loading was supervised by me, an airline representative and a member of the cabin crew (I recal in one case it was a stewardess).
The only other alternatives to get it back to Sydney would have been to post it (yeah!) or pack it in the removal van (yeah!).

This all took place in the early '80's, so it may well be even tougher as our gun laws are mnore stringent than they were then. And they were pretty tight even then.

I think we should petition Pete to have it left on, even tho' it is over limit.
It's not that I would ever suggest special treatment for anyone, but many people seem to be getting enjoyment from it. I think I'll start a poll (I'm sure Pete didn't create the poll facility so we could use it against him by way of a petition.............lol )

Here in N. Idaho, in almost every pickup I see there's a rifle on the rack in the back window

What is it with the rifle on a rack in the rear window, anyway.
We see it in alot of movies an TV shows.

Surely, they are only needed when you actually set out to go hunting.

It's a bit suss taking them down to K-mart to do the shopping, isn't it?

(Or is it that it's a way for people to have a firearm handy with the hassle of licensing a handgun?)

To enter the SIDA(The Ramp) we now have to pass a security check, just like the rest of the general populace(just in case we have intentions of comandeering our own aircraft, I suppose!) I informed the TSA official that was OK, I would just use the the cockpit crash axe for my next manicure. "Only in America"..........you said it. >:( >:(

Now I have heard it all.

What is the point. If the pilot wanted to, for instance, crash his plane into a building, (God bless all those souls), wouldn't he just ...........DO IT, with or without his 'nail clippers'.  Jebus. H

Like fitting a Browning machine gun, etc, to a restored  SE 5A bi-plane...?
Do these guns have to be blanked-off so that they cannot fire live rounds, (or even blanks)...?
