[quote]Lurch, I'm really shocked at what you paid. I did the conversions (1 Canadian Dollar = 5.55Rand). That's almost $700 for XP!!

I picked up my copy at a small computer store. It wasn't in a box but it was a legal copy. I don't care. Anyway, you guys in South Africa are getting screwed over when it comes to software. And I though Canadian import taxes were high.

I run Me becauase that's what came with the 'Package' that the Mrs (foolishly) wasted heaps of money on.
I must say, though, that as far as software is concerned we did pretty well.
We got the Me OS, MS Works, Word, Money, Encarta, Publisher, Frontpage, Outlook Xpress, (parts of) Office 2000, IMS shell, McAfee Anti-Virus and other stuff.
As I already had Office 97, I was able to install the missing parts to the Office 2000 and now have a complete Office program (although some parts are '97 model).
I think all that software (which we are both in a position to use all quite often) is worth many 100's of monies.
I think we did OK in that regard, anyway.

With ME, also we've never had an ouce of trouble installing or running any kind of program.

So, that's why I like what I've got - apart from the fact that it's all familiar to me, and I feel at home with it.

I think it depends on your system. I've seen computers that ran WinME perfectly, and others not so great ;)

I didn't have the best of luck with Win2000 Pro on my machine, but I have a friend who has never had a major problem with it

Maybe not your system so much as how whatever OS you choose is installed & set up from the start. This is the reason I leave that side of it to the pros. Then if anything goes wrong or doesn't work as advertised it goes straight back until I'm satisfied.  ;)

FOZZER, long time no talk, still playin' that strat? Windows 2000 is a network operating system (a subject I am current studying in a university for my MCSE)and has two types "Professional" and server the professional is a client, but can also be a stand alone OS. Win ME is based on win98, it is a stand alone OS, but it has lots of problems -- It works well when it is pre installed but it can be a pain in the *** if you try it as an upgrade -- I like xp the best so far but still have another laptop with Win ME (some games won,t run on XP but will still work with ME)

That must be why mine works fine. It came as original software with the Compaq package.
The program isn't even on a 'Windows' CD, it's on a Compaq System restore CD.  ;D ;)
