A mile in 3:58!

The world record is 4 something! :o

I can do a mile in about 8 min and I don't regularly run...I should though but I find other ways to stay fit.

Best of luck, Erik, but I would never, ever enlist.

USAF hard as the Marines, I pitty your military basic intelligence. LOL Just joking. its 90% class time 10% physical. They mostly do mental stuff to get you psyched up for it. But the Marine boot camp is 13 weeks, compared to the USAF's 6 weeks, USAF and Marines are like two opposites. If I went into the Marines I'd die lol.

So am I, USAF basic is 6 weeks, USMC basic is 13 weeks. The recruiter said they don't really care if you can do it under 18 minutes, just that you can do it, and that it can be improved. Oh and they do want me hehe, I've gotten called from every service, including the USCG to join up with them. I got a 50 on my ASVAB test... Armed Services Vocation Aptitude Battery. Only me and another person im my entire school PASSED that test. About 30 people took it. 47 is the national average so they want me for my smarts hehe. Not to good in math, but I excell in Mechanical and Electrical working. Two weeks ago the USAF called and said... "Mr. Haaland, would you be interested in the USAF. I have looked at your ASVAB scores and they are very impressive. Have you every considered working on military aircraft?"... It goes on from there. He showed me a bunch of stuff on aircraft avionics and engines. So I think thats what I might wanna do. It also gives me a chance to sit and work in the cockpits and everything else on the worlds biggest and baddest flying machines. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT!

How did you score so high on the test, and how can you take the test before signing up? I thought you took the test after you signed up ???

I was wondering about this but having no interest in athetics I didn't like to say anything. All I can say is that if you can really run a mile in under 4 minutes maybe you should consider a career in athletics.  ;)

From what I can make out the world record for the mile stands at 3:43.13.
It was set during the GOLDEN GALA - Rome, Italy on JULY 7TH, 1999 by Hichman El Guerouj of Morocco. I'm not sure the mile is still considered an official distance.

Because of the huge amount of publicity I still remember the first official "4 minute mile" - 3:59.6 set by Dr Roger Bannister on 6th May 1954, ancient history to most of you. Coe wasn't born then & didn't get his record until almost 30 years later. http://kajaks.celier.org/wr_progression/men/mile.shtml

thats the one, i couldnt think of the name for some reason coe was the first into my head ???
i was being considered for higher level athletics untill i tore the ligaments in my knee, after that i just lost the passion i had for it, same for soccer and cricket. its funny really, just after i tore them i thought it wasnt anythign major as the pain wasnt that bad, i was in training for a cross country championship race for my high school, my gym teacher refused to let me even  try and train, he just said try the bleep test for a few levels and see if i could get past 5. got to the end of gym on the first bleep turned and that was it, i knew he was right. i am trying to get it back now though, as i have become to lazy

The test must be taken before entrance into the military. It helps in placement in a field that you would likely do good in.

Erik,  Those are awesome scores ;D

THANKS loomex!

Andrew... You can take the ASVAB during 10-12th grade of high school, or administered by the armed services. Talk to your guidance counseler about it. I scored so high because my dad is an electrical engineer. I've been around electronics and machinery since I was born. I know alot about it, and I scored very high on the test. I'm going to take in next year once again, and try to get 51 or 52!

Homeschooled eh? Well if you're 17 go to your local USAF recruiter and talk about it. Yes while in the USAF I am planning on going to college. They pay full tuition so I get three pluses.

1. I get to work on something I like.

2. I get to go to college for free.

3. Maybe go into pilot training  ;D
