the first two weeks i was dragged around 2 miles, on a relitavly flat course, the 3rd week i was then took on a 4 mile run and then 6 mile for the final few weeks, my dad was in the army at the time, and as i was looking flabby he decided to take me out running with him thats how i first started, i was given certain maximum times i had to achieve and i would usually get something if i did, and being younger at the time the prospect of money for doing that was rather appealing, the first few days i could barely do the two miles, even my fat little dog was out running me:) but once my legs were used to it and the initial pain was gone it became alot easier. the thing was i was given specific distances which meant no real option but to do it, not like going one day 2 miles and then only 1 mile the next, as that doesnt work. all i can say is dont decrease what you run. but dont over do it either, once i was able to run long distances i pushed to hard and tore my MCL and ACL. i have only run a few times since.
Ozzy's recently taken up running he may be able to give some good advice
