well it wasnt exactly because of homer, burns decided he wanted the plant back because homer and pals in moes were taking the piss out of him and he wanted the respect back, and then the germans wanted to sell because the plant was in such a poor state and would have cost them double the cost of the plant to fix, that and the racoons:)

Another histoical reference (sort of) was the Haloween episode when Lisa managed to get guns banned in Springfield because she found the grave of a 20 year old man who had been killed by guns-his name was William James.

Yea, like the Model UN club one. Milhouse is talking about Poland "I heard they set a rocket to the sun once, at night. And there was that submarine with the screen door." Speaking of making fun of Poland, "All in the Family" was another show that would poke fun at everything. "God made woman from Adam's rib, see, cheaper cut"

The 'Model UN ' episode where the kids get marooned on an island has a number of obvious references to "Lord of the Flies" (not historic - but a book)
Nelson - "The hunt is on" while painting his cheeks with charcoal..........

The 'B Sharps' episode is very obviously a 'hystoric' satire of the Beatles career. Harrison even makes a last minute appearance.

I suppose the episode where a St Patrick's Day celebration results in Springfield declaring itself 'Dry' is a pretty good satirical look at 'Prohibition' and the exploits of the 'Bootleggers' and the 'Untouchables'.

Yes I suppose it is a historical reference.

My dad tried to "lecture" me on the themes for Soilent Green when I was a kid.

There are some references to JFK in simpsons. Like there was a small thing where JFK is on a PT Boat and I think it was numbered 109.

I'm not sure who said it in Simpsons JFK or mayor Quimby but one of them said. 'Ich bin ein Berliner'

Another episode when Side Show Bob ran for mayor. When there was a televised debate between Side Show Bob and Quimby and Side Show Bob win because of appearance, they copied the debate between Nixon and Kennedy.

In the same episode when Side Show Bob became mayor, Lisa went to the library to do some research and fell asleep in the center of the library, they copied the scene from the "Presidents Men" Goldstien was reading the votes. Then Lisa and Bart met "Deepthroat".

Again in the Side Show Bob mayor episode, he said "You want the truth, you cant handle the truth. You need me." That was Nicolsons line in a Few Good Men.

There was another episode when Burns ran for mayor and had that big black and white photo of him in the backround.

it was quimby who said ich bin thingy when the germans bought the power plant.
they also had two presidential candidates endorsing beer, cant remember who it was, i think nixon was one of them . infact they take the pee out of nixon alot in both the simpsons and futurama, and same for clinton, like when lisa looses the band competition because of glow sticks, then clinton comes along at the end awards her the prize and says something like if you cant win always complain and you will get oyur way, marge says thats a pretty lousy moral, and he says well i'm a lousy president. or something like that:)

The JFK character also said it on the PT 109 when grandpa was telling his story about WWII (The Hellfish). They then accused him of being a Nazi and beat the crap out of him.
Quimby also says "ich bin ein Springfielder" at some point. I think in the episode where they celebrate either Jebadiah's Day or Whacking Day.
