The alternative would be to use Opera for browsing instead of IE & forget about pop-ups for good.

I had to review Opera for a college assignment, and i was damn impressed with it. Now you tell me pop-ups designed for IE/Netscape are imune to it? ;D :o ;D

I've never seen a single pop-up while using Opera. It's reckoned to be the most secure browser available. http://www.opera.com/support/service/security/

Is ZoneAlarm freeware?

I keep getting these messenger pop-up windows. They aren't IE ads, they're windows. I used to not get then recently all of a sudden started ??? Will A firewall block them?

Andrew. There are freeware versions of all security software mentioned in this thread, including the Opera browser. Check out the links.

Zone Alarm might not fix your problem but it's well worth installing. IMHO

PS. I thought you use WinXP? I understand it has its own firewall

Just to confirm - simviation only uses a single pop-under on the main page. Once you close it that should be the end of it for that session.

& please remember simviation depends on this. The ads are non invasive, no spyware & very carefully controlled for content.

I'm not mad at SimV or Aerie, its just that these adds made it imposible to do anything and didn't take no for an answer :-/

Craig. First of all I'm glad you seem to have fixed the problem. I think some confusion arose from people misreading your original topic which sent the thread off track. Can you please confirm that "this site" referred to in this quote is the guitar tab site & NOT Simviation.
ps. this has never happened before from this site, I've been using it for over a year and its never given me any trouble


For the sake of Pete's sanity I'll try to clear this up once & for all. I've been visiting Simviation almost every day for longer than I care to think about, long before this forum existed. Despite my comments on Opera I prefer IE. It's quicker for me & I use it 99% of the time. I find pop-ups annoying in general but most are quite harmless. The pop-under Pete mentioned as used by Simviation is the least offensive type & never bothered me. I run no special security software while online apart from Zone Alarm & of course Norton Anti-Virus. I run Ad-aware or similar anti-spyware utility before I shut down.

Anyone who's visited a warez or porn site, either intentionally or by accident, will be familiar with the pop-ups Craig is talking about. These will multiply faster than you can shut them down. Clicking on one makes 2 more appear. Some display full screen with no obvious way to remove them. I'm not sure quite what triggers them or how they work. They're a darned nuisance but comparatively harmless. I'm sure they do no permanent damage to your system.

I think clearing your History & Temp Internet files +  running Ad-aware should remove the problem. Also check your Favourites list for links you didn't bookmark This is another "favourite" trick of the scoundrels who do this sort of thing.

I realise that simV is blameless but the way it was working was to open on those pages visited most, for example it was taking longer and longer for me to be able to access this thread, same goes for http://www.biohazcentral.com/ (SFP1 site). Also by "this site" I was refering to guitar one.

The problem with that free pop-up killer mentioned is that it is for IE only. I use netscape

I just found another pop-up killer that is free

Is it just me or does it seem that allnodesbusy.com has more pop-up ads? i'm looking through their newest files and ads are popping up every few seconds >:(

I have noticed that it seems that the pop-up are heavier at differant times of the day. Kind of like TV commercials. the amount and type vary by the time of the day
