I thought since you're talking about kamikazi's, I would share an incident that happened to my Grandfather.

He was a radio operator stationed on a Destroyer Escort during WW2 (I forget which ship it was, but it had set a record of sinking jap subs). One day during the spring of 1945, a jap fighter\bomber started an attack on his ship. His battle station was to help with the ammunition. The aircraft wasn't a kamikazi, but it tried to bomb the ship, the ship's artillary hit the aircraft and the pilot decided that instead of crashing into the water, it would hit the ship. It slammed into the radio shack killing every radio operator onboard that ship except my grandfather who was elsewhere.

That's a remarkable story Andrew. It must have been terrifying facing an enemy that was trying to die and take a ship with him.

Brensec, How accurate is the movie 'We Were Soldiers' compared to the book?

I'm curious because I happened to see the book that the movie was based on as I was ordering the book to Blackhawk down 8)

You've got me on that one, mate. I haven't read the book, sorry.
I have seen a couple of interviews, including one with Mel and in both it was indicated the the film was a faithful account of the first American "battle" in Vietnam.

Besides, my good mate, Mel would have anything to do with anything that was "bogus".......................lol

You said you have got "The Great Escape" book. I can tell you that the film is almost a word for word, event by event account of the movie.................or vice versa..............lol ;D ;)

Actually, I got 'The Great Escape' on dvd. It's not a book, it's a movie on a disk instead of a video cassette. ;)

The book I am getting is 'BlackHawk Down: A Sory of Modern War' by Mark Bowden. It's what the video 'Blackhawk Down' was based on

Sorry, got confused , mate.

Anyway, if you've read the Great Escape, then the DVD will be exactly the same.................lol.

As for Blackhawk Down, I haven't read the book but I've seen the movie and also a Histary Channel Doco called "The Truth About Blackhawk Down" and the doco seemed to be a very good account of the movie.

;D ;)

P.S. Saw that preview of the History Channel - P38 Special again, and they definitely say in this preview something like "see actual footage and hear from our guest P38 pilot, about the famous P38, the plane that achieved more enemy aircraft kills than any other fighter".
It's on Thursday night, so I'm going to tape it and see if there's anything in the doco concerning this.

Stay tuned!  ;D ;)

Just finished the book, it was quite good.

My Grandfather just bought the movie, so it looks like i'll be able to watch it anytime I want ;D

Have any of you ever seen the old movie "To Hell and Back."?  It's really good.

Finally, something new has come up on the History channel. Sounds good too!

New weekly series called "Aces High".
According to the promo's, it going to be about WWI and WWII planes and aces. Supposed to go right into the "nitty gritty" of certain victories, famous engagements etc and of course the people and planes.

Has anyone seen or heard of it (I seem to get the impreesion that our Fox Cable is a bit behind th US and UK)?

Anyway, if not, it' starts Thursday next (10/04) so I'll report what I see if it's of any interest.  ;D ;)

I remember seeing a movie some years back. Cannot remember the name of it. It starred Rock Hudson as an USAF Officer in Korea. He fell in love with a missionary or something like that but there was a boatload of footage of P51's doing ground attacks - and in color.

Sounds familiar, but probably because I play the old 'Aces High' game ;)

I don't get cable, so maybe that's it ::)

I vaguely recall this movie. Don't remember who was in it or much about it.
Is it the one where this pilot risks his life at the end to get a transport to the mission and rescue the lady and a bunch of kids, from the advancing Chinese?
In this movie I seem to recall at the end they show the real mission which was set up afterwards and a memorial to this bloke and the kids. (something like that anyway)  ;D ;)
