Non-M$ Flight Sims: Any good ones

Postby Iroquois » Mon Mar 17, 2003 6:28 pm

I saw an ad for IL2 (it's a WW2 sim for the Soviet Union). It looked pretty good but I have doubts on non-M$ sims. I've played other WWII combat sims but none of them seem to make par with CFS1, 2 and 3. Are there any decent non-M$ sims out there?

FLY! seems to be popular, but I'm not familiar with the pros & cons.

There's a demo for IL2 Sturmovik available at www.il2sturmovik.com. It's made by Ubi Soft. It's a big download. (142MB) Going to try it out and report back.

Lets not forget "European Air War" and "Mig Ally".  Both are good sims and are still availiable, in the bargin bin, for about $10.00 U.S.
I believe "European Air War" still has an online following and skins are availiable on some sites.

Also "Forgotten Wars", the next version of "Il-2", just hit the stands last week.  It looks good but requires a horse of a machine to run it!

There are only 2 non-M$ flight sims I have ever liked.  They are IL-2, and Janes WWII Fighters.  I love IL-2, maybe more than CFS3 and James is an awesome game but a little old-graphics are between CFS1 and CFS2 but its a lot of fun.

why does no one mention "B-17 Flying Fortress - The Mighty 8th" ??

it's the best and most dramatic WW2 bombersim i've ever played...

additional flight sims: Falcon IV ; Comanche-Hokum ; USAF ; USNF ; Fighters Anthology ; Top Gun: Fire at will and IL-2: Forgotten Battles.

Hi Andrew.... ;D...!
You've probably sussed out now that the request was for "non-Microsoft" games.... :)...!
(I've got FS'98, FS 2000 Pro and FS2002 Pro)

Longbow and Longbow II are FAB helicopter sims, easy to fly, with invincibility and infinite weapons, (I like invincibility and infinite weapons very much!).
(It's the sort of thing our tortoise would like).... ;)...!
LOL...!

Cheers mate...

I've got Janes IAF and Mig Alley, for some reason I never liked mig Alley though. As for IAF  ;D ;D ;D ;D
I've littered the Mid east with about 600 Migs of the Iraqi,Syrian, Egyptian and Jordainian air forces  ;D, I think it can still be found ;D

B-17, apart from Operation Overlord was (is) the finest flight Sim available on the amiga.

I have B-17 the mighty 8th and as yet have failed to taxi to the run-way.  I can't seen to turn the stupid thing.

I would love to have an up to date modern combat flight simulator.  Something like the ones you used to get for the amiga.

Games centered around One aeroplane and it's missions with various theatres and levels of threat.

I used to love F117-a Stealth bomber.  The trick was to fly really low and you couldn't get hit.  All the runways were north-south alligned and if you didnt get your approach lined up perfectly you culd land the plane at a 45 degree angle to the centeline and it would roll straight.

Great fun.

On the PC I'm afraid that nothing really comes close to the M$ games as even though we love to hate 'em (M$ - not the simulators) expandable.  I still play CFS1 online with frame rates of 70+ and have recently started mission writing with plans to write missions for modern aircraft.

Ramble over now.

Will ;D
